Public & Private Hospital Suggestions

Hi Moms of Melbourne 💕

My name is Hailey and I'm currently 6w4d with my first pregnancy ☺️ I'm located in 3123 Hawthorn East. I'm originally from Vietnam and have been living in Melbourne since 2015. We are currently waiting for our Permanent Residency to come through this April so I'm currently not covered by Medicare.

We are here alone with not much help or information on giving birth in Australia and would love some help with suggestions on public & private hospitals.

Also any suggestions for GP would be very lovely as the current GP that I go to does not seems to be very helpful. She just gave me a list of websites and told me to do the research myself.

Thank you so much for all your help ❤️

Do you have private insurance?

Where abouts are you located? I have an amazing female gp but she is in altona. I am having my 3rd baby at Werribee mercy through the public system and have been very happy with care of all three pregnancies and babies

congratulations! it will depend where you’re located. i had my daughter at mitcham private hospital and my obstetrician was dr peter tang. i cannot fault mitcham or peter. we had the best experience.

Unfortunately I don't ☹️ I only have Visitor Heath Cover with Allianz.

Congrats!
Public hospitals are really good in Australia. I’ve birthed at both Box Hill & the Angliss and have had great experiences both times. I personally wouldn’t pay to go Private. I would recommend being part of the Midwifery Group Practice (or equivalent) where you have a dedicated midwife who takes you through the whole pregnancy.

I'm actually located in Hawthorn East near CBD. Would love to have the contact of the GP in Altona as we dont mind travelling around 🥰 Thanks Alexis

She’s definitely worth the travel. Pier St Medical Centre - Dr Shade Okedara 93983711

I had my third at St John of god Berwick and my ob was Dr Kiran Atmuri, both were fantastic! And you can pay $1000 and go there without having private cover :) I don’t think you have a choice about the ob if you are public but the midwives and everything are amazing!

I recommend the royal woman’s, they are massive help as I am a New Zealander

I just got my first child in the Royal Woman's 7 weeks ago. I have to give them that they are professional, knowledgeable, friendly and compassionate. I really appreciate what they done for me..BUT.. the problem is you don't get to choose what you want if you choose to go to public hospital. And apparently they are short of staff and rooms which will affect the service you could get. I stay in labour for freaking 67 hours just because they don't have enought midwife and labour room for me. I honestly suggest you to go private hospital if you could afford it.

Hi Hailey, I’ve also just found out I’m pregnant and live in Hawthorn 3122. I opted to go public for my birth and due to my location and zoned for the Royal Women’s Hospital in Parkville. I’ve heard they are great but haven’t had an appointment with them yet. I’m also seeing Dr Alison Ryan at Hawthorn Medical on Power Road. She is able to do shared care- which I think I’ll do- so I can do most of my appointments with her and not travel to Parkville.
Hope this helps!

just curious, what did you want the hospital to do differently for you? Was it around access to pain relief for your long labour? Cause im not sure the midwives could have made it much shorter - our body tends to decide that! But im sorry that it was a tough labour for you.

I'm located in Hawthorn East. I will definitely consider Mitcham & Dr Peter. Thank you so much Abbie 🤍

I actually asked for induction or emergency C-section, the midwife said they can't do the C-section for me as it wasn't emergency and my baby was fine. I can understand that.
Then she told me I need to wait for the induction as there's no place for me yet, so I had been waiting at home and another 30 hours hours in the hospital to finally got a spot in labour room and induction. Even though my GP said it's not normal.
But again, I know there's not much they can do for me as short of staff and place. And I know the fact that they did try their best to help me.

Thank you Merryn for the suggestions. I'll definitely look into MGP 🥳

Thank you Nikki 😍

Thanks Tash! The women's is definitely one of the good options out there ❤️

Hii Rachel! What a coincidence cause I was planning to see Dr Alison Ryan as well. But at the time that I found out I'm pregnant, her schedule was all booked out. I ended up seeing another GP in CBD.

Its good to know that I am still within the zone for The Women's cause according to the website they vaguely stated that you have to live in the local area but doesn't tell you how far away is the limit. Thanks for letting me know! ❤️

same here, hospital and Obs were fantastic.
My first was at RWH and was a traumatic experience. Second we went w Dr Kiran Atmuri and was a healing experience.
We didn't have private insurance and was more affordable than we expected.
Good luck!
