Collecting colostrum

Hi guys, any advice re. Collecting colostrum? I’m 32+4 with MCDA twins, and have been leaking since I was about 19 weeks.. definitely more so now, to the point the bed sheets / my tops get soaked and I feel it’s such a waste!! I asked the midwife about this as I know hand expressing before 37 weeks is not advised as it can encourage pre term labour, so she said I could buy some milk collection shells to try and catch the colostrum as long as I don’t actually hand express.. but I’m having no luck! I never know when I’m actually going to leak, and never seem to be able to catch any in the shells, and then I’ll end up leaking loads and just feel it’s such a waste that I haven’t collected it.. any advice from past experiences??

I ended up having my twins at 34 weeks and planned on formula feeding from pregnancy but ended up leaking and the midwives gave me some individual sterile tubs to collect in and then colostrum specific syringes to suck it up and then you can freeze. If you’ve not been given these would ask your midwife might help! Each syringe is only 1ml I think.

@Sarah they’ve given me the syringes, but I’m just struggling to actually catch the colostrum because I never know when I’m actually going to leak, and the midwife said I shouldn’t be hand expressing or anything to try and collect it, I just should just try to catch it if I can, so I’m just finding it tricky. They’ve said I might have to deliver at 34 weeks so I’m really keen to try and collect what I can beforehand x

I found after a shower I leaked the most so you could try then but yes definitely don’t hand express as can encourage labour. I had my girls at 34+2 we did 16 days in SCBU now 14 months and no issues 🙌 x

@Sarah awww congratulations! Thank you, that’s really reassuring. Glad your girls are doing well now💗x
