Weaning

Hello, can I just ask you all when you started weaning your preemie please? I thought I would start around 6 months corrected age but we had a check in with our Consultant the other day and she said to start at 4 months actual age ie) now. I don't think my little one is ready yet as even though she is showing some cues such as keeping her own head up well and showing interest in what we are eating, she's not yet sitting up unaided or chewing on toys. Please share your experiences, I would be so grateful!

Hey, I'm interested in this too, my little girl is nearly 6 months (actual) but 6 weeks early (so 4.5m corrected). She's not quite at the sitting unaided stage yet, and only just starting to show interest in food, I was going to go with her development rather than a specific age but interested to know other people's thoughts

Don’t do it until baby is ready I was told by consultants to wean at four months actual age and he was 12 weeks early.
I weaned at 5 1/2 months corrected. He was ready sooner but couldn’t sit well in his high chair he slumped to the side. So I waited a little longer.

Bliss have info on when to wean prem babies I found really helpful

Thanks for sharing! I've been looking at Bliss too which says 5 months corrected age. I was quite surprised the consultant suggested 4 months actual age!

also the whole sitting unassisted isn’t necessary as long as they can sit well in their high chair. Have head control and can bring their hand to mouth.

@L 💜 thank you so much! Really good to know :)

My LO was 6 weeks early and we gave him his first bit of porridge at 4.5 months actual age. He had bad reflux up until that point.

I started weaning my 28 weeker when she was 6 months actual/3 months corrected because she was ready; sitting well, reaching for food etc. but it wasn’t until she was about 7/8 months I felt like she was actually eating properly

I have a 33 weeker, she’s now 4 1/2 months and we were told the same thing to start weaning at 4 month actual but not to introduce solids until 6 month correct age. I personally haven’t started weaning - she suggested baby rice, then purées until after Xmas. I didn’t feel that she was ready a couple of weeks ago, so didn’t start. She’s sitting a lot better, head control has improved etc. and her hand eye coordination is good so I think I will start soon but probably 5 months actual onwards if I think she’s ready then. I’m not rushing, but the consultant did say 6 months actual latest to start so I will take that into consideration x

@Imogen That's really interesting, thanks for sharing! My LO also has terrible reflux so that gives me hope that it will settle when we get going with weaning. Porridge is a great idea to start with :)

Thank you! Good to know :)

@Rebecca It sounds like we are in the same boat! My LO was a 32 weeker and is now 4 1/2 months actual. Good to know that I should try to start before 6 months actual, thank you :)

we only started with a small amount but it really helped a lot. He’s now 14 months old and eats anything 😂

That's brilliant! Go him!

I was just wondering if your paediatrician said when to introduce water? We’ve recently started my LO on baby rice and porridge, and the past couple of days she’s started individual puréed veggies. She’s taken to it really well, I’m glad I waited a bit longer - she’s now wolfing whatever is offered and is enjoying the new tastes, but everything for weaning says offer water alongside but I’m just wondering if I should do so now, 6 months actual or 6 months corrected?!

@Rebecca The consultant didn't say anything about water so I'm unsure, sorry. I've started my little one on veggie purees and I put a bit of boiled water in with the veg to make sure it's a good consistency but that's about it. I will try and find out! BTW, I've also given my little one pureed egg yesterday and today which she absolutely loves! I'm glad your LO has taken well to weaning too :)
