Maternity leave query

Hi All,

Can anyone assist me with Maternity leave process?

I'm new here in Melbourne and it's my first pregnancy so not sure how things work here. As a working professional, I am eligible for Maternity leave from company for 16 week and as per new law I am eligible to get upto 20 weeks paid leave?

Does that mean I can get both? Can anyone assist me with this process?

Thanks in advance.

My understanding is that you can do both (unfortunately I am not eligible for paid leave from work due to not having worked there long. But most people will use their work leave first, then use the paid government leave

I was under the impression that your work payment and the government payment are seperate and you can get both that's what my work told me you just have to apply for the government money within 1 year from birth so I would apply for the government money as soon as your work stop payments

In Nsw, if I have been working for a year with the company, then I am entitled to maternity leave.
For instance, if the company is giving me 18 weeks, then I can get 18 weeks' pay from the company, and after that, I can get it from the government.
Have to apply centerlink.

You can also have your Centrelink paid via your work schedule too. So Centrelink will always be paid first then the work one

Yeah it’s both - I’m about to do the application process now but when I was looking into it, your paid leave is your standard salary and then the government 20 weeks is at minimum/set wage. You can get the payments at the same time or back to back. My work’s payroll team helped explain the process to me a bit too.
