I’m about to start a new 9-5 job that I got before I knew I was pregnant I’m now 9 weeks but unsure when to tell them and how to get around going to scans etc. I’m worried I will be misunderstood that I just got into the job for maternity pay but that’s not the case. Does anyone have any advice about when to say/dealing with anxiety surrounding this? ❤️

when did you find out? im not sure you’ll even qualify for maternity pay as you haven’t even started yet. don’t you have to have been working there for a certain amount of time before you can?

I wouldn’t worry too much about being misunderstood- you won’t qualify for maternity pay from the company or SMP if you were pregnant before you started the job (I’m in the same boat) you have to claim Mat Allowance from the government so the company don’t have a leg to stand on. Be confident, these things happen 🤍

Exact same situation happened to me, found out the day before I was due to start... i told them at 13 weeks and just was honest about it all they were really understanding and I was worried to tell them for nothing. If you were pregnant before you start your job you won't qualify for smp and will get maternity allowance from the government instead:) xx

I was in the same boat as you and got a new job before I realised I was pregnant but was already around 13 weeks by the time I started. I think I told them somewhere around 15-18 weeks as they can’t prove whether you knew beforehand or not anyway. I just sent an email rather than in person, you have to work there 26 weeks to qualify for their pay otherwise it’s government SMP, in which case you have to go through the process of giving them your MATB1 that you get at 20 weeks so they can write a letter saying you don’t qualify for their pay and you can then fill out the forms to send to DWP. Point being it’s easier to tell them before 20 weeks so you can sort all that out at the 20 week mark when you receive your MATB1 from midwife. Good luck. You’ll be fine! ❤️

that’s super helpful thank you!

thank you!
