Okay so I need advice. My dog attacked my cousin last night. He is 9 and it was pretty bad. He had to get stitches and is physically okay but is traumatized. My fiancé was at work and I called asking him what to do and he didn’t know and couldn’t talk. So I called a few friends and family and cried for hours and everyone suggested rehoming him to someone who just wants him. No kids no other pets. And can love him and only him. I feel like I failed him but in a way I feel like giving him this home would not be failing him. I feel keeping him and being cautious all the time is failing him. My dog will be 2 in November so he’s still a puppy. We’ve tried crate training and he escapes he opens windows and leaves. Any way to escape he finds. We tried leaving him on a lead and while he was on the lead he attacked my cousin. I just don’t know what to do. When I suggested rehoming him to my fiancé he got quiet said we failed him and the shut down completely. Which made me feel horrible and re think everything. We love this dog. He is good with our daughter who is 7 months old but I am scared that he will randomly decide to attack her like he did with my cousin. Or he may attack another kid. He isn’t usually aggressive but he has had small outbursts of aggression over the last year and a half. What should I do?

What breed is the dog? Are they getting adequate exercise? Some dogs with high prey drive, energy, working breed dogs get frustrated and bored with lack of mental and physical stimuli. I would recommend a trainer first if you want to try to keep him. Was the dog possibly resource guarding when the attack happened?
Definitely keep a close eye on your daughter with him. I would teach her to leave him alone completely. Kids are unpredictable and honestly most dogs don’t like kids because they don’t respect their boundaries and don’t pick up on their body language ‘warnings’ to back off.

What was going on when the dog attacked him? Like was he playing with him or not even interacting with him?
he was playing with him
he’s a Shiba Inu he runs away a lot we have been allowing him stay out on a long lead
his vet just said the opposite 😩😩 this is so difficult. I had the same thought as you tho

I personally couldnt carry on caring for a dog that did with a baby around... My daughter got attacked by a dog who "loves kids and wouldn't hurt a fly" last year. this dog dragged my daughter off a zip wire. Not sure where you live but the police automatically get involved too when a dog bite has been reported.
yeah I asked what the next step is they said there might be an investigation. My cousin said the hospital said the dog isn’t in any trouble. Idk
do you currently have a dog? If you don’t mind me asking.

Depending on their health insurance, there may be an investigation opened up so that they aren’t liable for the bill. Just a heads up😔 It’s a crappy situation all around when things like this happen.. Since this seems unprovoked I would definitely hesitate keeping him. He may have been resource guarding a toy, if that’s how they were playing, and just snapped. When your daughter becomes more mobile she could get too close to his food or a toy and attack her😕
and if this was your dog you would rehome him? I’m just going through all the motions. He is my first baby but I need to protect my human baby and that’s hard to think about. I feel like I’m a horrible dog mom for considering it. And I feel like I’m going to miss seeing my daughter and my pup grow up together. But I also can’t stop thinking about this happening again. I love him. I do. It just makes me feel so guilty
this is what’s been on my mind as well. I plan on paying the bill already idk if that makes a difference

You’re a good person going through a bad situation. I feel for you😔

I would rehome to someone who understands dog behaviour and can provide the dog with lots of stimulation and training. I’m not saying you can’t at all, but it just doesn’t sound like your home is suitable for him. No disrespect for you at all, I think it’s really sensible and brave that you’re even asking about this. You haven’t failed him at all, it’s just that he clearly needs a certain type of environment and it sounds like that is a home with no children and probably somewhere quiet with lots of exercise and stimulation. At the end of the day, you have to do what’s right for the dog, not what’s right for you.
I really appreciate it that’s exactly what I was looking for. Someone else who has been through something similar. I really appreciate it.
it’s super hard. And there’s just so many aspects.

Call the SPCA
Report the dog and ge tit away from your loved ones.

YOU DIDNT FAIL THE DOG. YOURE NOT FAILING! Sometimes your home just isn’t the right fit for the animals needs and THATS OKAY! We had to rehome a cat because our dogs were bullies to him and it wasn’t working out. Being in our house wasn’t the best for him so we did what was needed.
we got him before I got pregnant and I was not planing on being pregnant anytime soon. All the sanctuaries near me are full 😩 idk what to do I spoke with a trainer and she suggested Prozac but it will take time to work and I was told not to put money into him until the health department contacts me because he may need to be put down.

I had a reactive shepherd mix when we had our baby. She had bitten in the past at the shelter where I got her and had bitten my brother once after she came home. She absolutely loved my son, but she was super unpredictable. Finally I decided her behavior was too unpredictable to trust her around him. She never threatened him, but a 70lb shepherd could kill an 8 month old baby very quickly. We considered rehoming, but with her bite history and behavior issues it would have been irresponsible and unethical. We ended up choosing behavioral euthanasia.
I loved her. I still miss her very VERY much. But the safety of my child is my only priority.
If you think you can ethically rehome your dog, you should. Be sure to disclose the bite history so the next owner knows what to expect.

If you rehome, please contact a rescue to work with his behavioral problems bc he could do it to other people/child. And that’s unnecessary. He did a number to require stitches. My parents had to euthanize their dog because he was 10 and had cancer in his leg and attacked my dad twice. Blood everywhere. Which was out of the ordinary bc they always slept together. The first time they tried to justify it but it happened less than 3 weeks later. Urgent care didn’t stitch my dad but he had puncture wounds all over his upper arm. The dog should of been reported to the town and you should be served papers.
since it was in the family and we all live on the same property no one is serving papers to my knowledge I’m in contact with the health department his vet and a trainer specific to his breed it was an isolated incident he isn’t usually aggressive. I wouldn’t give him to someone without disclosing what happened.
yes this is all stuff that I have discussed with all the sanctuaries and vets and trainers. I don’t want anyone to be at risk. He isn’t aggressive all the time he’s just had a bit of food aggression but this is the first time he’s hurt someone. I just feel horrible
the trainer thinks his behavior is caused by anxiety after going through his history
yes I want him to have a happy home. He’s a good boy I just think this is due to our environment. I just want him in an environment where he can be free and happy
yeah 🙃
I hope so. I’m trying to find an only adult household or see if the breeder may take him back

If you got him from a reputable breeder they should take him back. I know it’s in my breeder’s puppy contract that if I ever can’t keep my dog he will go back to his breeder. That’s why reputable breeders don’t contribute to the sheltering crisis, they take care of their puppies for their whole life.
I’m hoping he can go there. I want him to be well taken care of I don’t want to give him to just any one. I honestly don’t want to give him away at all I have been crying non stop the past 3 days. This is so hard. And I feel guilty for being sad because he hurt someone and I just love him so much and I feel like my heart is just breaking I feel horrible giving him away I’d feel horrible keeping him. I just don’t see any situation that will make me feel better. So I’m looking at what’s best for him and I think that’s for him to go somewhere else. But I can’t stop thinking about how confusing it’ll be for him and if he’ll miss us

It’ll be very hard, but you know it’s best for your family. Don’t feel guilty for being sad. It’s a terrible situation, you’re allowed to feel sad! I cried for weeks when we lost our girl. But I also know my son is safer now. His safety and well-being is much more important to me than any animal ever will be. That doesn’t mean she wasn’t important to me. We trained every day, I worked with her on her triggers, we built such a strong bond. I absolutely loved my dog. But sometimes dogs aren’t fit for certain lives. She wasn’t suited for being around people at all. It sounds like your dog can be around people, just not kids. It’s very likely he will find a great new home that’s a perfect fit for him.

I’ve spoken to a breed specific trainer but I’m not sure we’re able to do everything that has to be done
we are looking for someone we know so we can still keep up with him but obviously if we can find a safe home anywhere we’ll let him go🥺

You can do it, Incog. I’m sorry you have to go through it. It’s so hard.
it is so hard 🥺
