This might be a stupid question but I don’t have Facebook but I checked my spouse Facebook and it says “you are now connected” to a lot of females on his messenger app does that mean he is messaging them?

They could have recently become friends on FB, added to messenger if you don't see any previous chat between them
I think that just means he has added them as friends. If he had sent messages you would see them. Unless he archived them or moved them into his spam folder. Or full out deleted the conversations.
That means they have recently added each other. Sometimes Facebook suggests the wave at them
