Spica cast

I work in a pediatric office and an ortho office before that. I’m well versed in these casts. What’s up?

Our son has a hair line fracture on his femur. They are suggesting a spica cast with no bar. Is this normal or extreme? How can we prepare our son for this ? He is 2.5 and has a speech delay. I’m very nervous about him going under anesthesia. The hospital isn’t great about being more empathic and understanding or gentle with families. It seems rushed and in and out. They don’t seem very coordinated either. We are talking to three different nurses and tree different phone numbers and and three different doctors. The casting doctor was extremely busy and didn’t have time to answer all our questions unless we went in for the procedure.
