Hi ladies, one of my close friends has said she is going to get married in Santorini next summer during the school holidays. Personally I feel that in the current climate a years notice should be given for weddings overseas, so we have time to save. No babies are invited to the wedding but she said there would be child minder recommendations from the wedding planner, if we wanted to spend a week there for a holiday around the event. I don’t feel comfortable leaving my baby for bed time (wedding in late avo) with someone she doesn’t know in accommodation not near the venue. I worry that it will cost us thousands (the baby would be 2, so would have to pay full flight prices) & I don’t know what to do! Either I fly for the weekend and leave partner and baby at home or we go and have it as our summer holiday but try and find places away from everyone else so we could have our family time too and then my partner stays with the baby and I go to the wedding. Finances are very strained atm anyway and I don’t know what to do?!

Personally I wouldn’t go. We have had to reject two friends weddings (one this year and another for next) who are marrying abroad. Babies weren’t allowed at either so that was our reason for not going. I just explained that unfortunately I wasn’t willing to travel to another country without my son to holiday without him. They also told us that we could use a childminder but I said that I’m not comfortable doing that but would be more than willing to go if he would be allowed to attend to. The answer was no so I politely declined because it was causing me unnecessary stress.
It costs a small fortune to attend a wedding abroad and I think people need to understand that not everyone will be able to make it if that’s what they’re choosing to do, especially if it means leaving their babies behind!
Keep your money and use it for a family holiday. Your friend will understand xx

This happened to me too :)
However it was my best friend, if it was anyone else I wouldnt of gone.
It cost a lot of money, but we made it in to a “family” holiday instead, we all chipped in for a villa with my partners parents, his brother & sister in law and they looked after our little one whilst we went to the wedding for a few hours, we stayed for a week on total x

This is similar to our situation, only it's my brother getting married in 2025 in kefalonia. Thankfully we've got nearly 2 yrs to save, but it's definitely not going to be cheap, kids are invited, but we've got my step daughter to pay for, and my LG will be just turned 3 so have to pay full for her (pretty sure she's free up till the age of 3?)

We’ve been to Santorini in August. It’s a very expensive Island! I’ve also read it’s one of the most expensive in Greece.

I've turned down weddings in the UK for childcare reasons! I think before people have children saying you can just get a babysitter, they have no idea of the actual reality of getting children to go to sleep! Do what works for you, if you want to make it a holiday do it, and if you want to go on your own for a weekend also fine, but definitely also fine to just say you can't make it!
