Toddler doesn’t like newborn!! Help

What am I doing wrong? My 19 month old doesn’t seem to like my newborn (2 weeks old), am I doing something wrong?

What did you do to help them get along?

I don’t want to upset my toddler or make her feel left out, but I’m struggling as the newborn needs a lot of attention obviously 😫😫

We practiced something called “don’t blame the baby”
It’s a lot about language to the toddlers
So for example. Instead of saying to your toddler “I can’t play with you right now because I have to (feed/change/put to sleep) the baby”
Instead you say: you want me to play with you? Okay I will play with you in 5 mins

The first way makes toddler feel that her fun is over (obviously it’s not ) but in their little mind it is.
And this for an example for whatever they ask. Don’t tell them no “because of baby”

Also, I had my toddler help out in as many ways as possible BUT also, respecting him whenever he said no, he didn’t want to help throw away a diaper or no he didn’t want to get a toy or whatever it was.

Lastly, devote time to your toddler.
I know your baby is only 2 weeks ago but try to find a time each parent spends alone time with toddler and then both you and dad spend alone time with toddler

It’s not easy and takes lots of patience
And the language thing was pretty difficult
Sometimes we slipped but immediately corrected ourselves

We also made our family members aware of the language

Anyone who came to visit the new baby… we made them very aware they must play and give our toddler attention
Kids are so smart. They notice ALL OF THIS
All of the new attention is going straight to baby and less attention on them
They need extra extra loving right now

Try and involve your toddler in things even if it's asking them to get a nappy when you are changing the newborn. We always ensured baby was put to sleep in the moses basket so we could have one on one time with our eldest too x

Ah thanks everyone, I really do hope it gets better.

If I say ‘I’ll play in 5 mins’ or something she won’t actually understand what I’m saying, but I think I’ll just keep saying positive stuff like that anyway, ready for when she does understand me

I popped my toddler in the cot in our living room with our newborn who was asleep and she generally loved it, had so much fun and was laughing her head off.. that’s the happiest she’s been so far and I think it’s because the baby was asleep 😅😅

I know the toddler is young but continue to speak in those sentences to her.
They may not fully comprehend because they are so young but I promise you, children understand many things!
So steer away from the language of “because of the baby… this or that”
Continue the positive talk
It’ll require lots of patience and repetition but I’m sure they will love each other !
