C-section at John Radcliffe

I had an elective c-section at the JR, the surgery and birth was a really calm and nice experience with a lovely team of people. The aftercare wasn’t so good, really advocate for your self with medication. I was 18m ago so there were still covid protocols in place so think it isn’t that representative of today. I’d recommended a small bag as well as your hospital bag so you have the essentials closer to hand in the night when you are ok your own and a long wire phone charge is great. The drs at the JR are great it’s one of the best hospitals in the country, yoy are in safe hands, good luck for tomorrow, you will be amazing x

Take some paracetamol with you, they can be a bit slack on the pain relief after a C-section! Good luck! 💕

Hi lovely, ahh it’s such a whirlwind isn’t it! Mine was a planned emergency (basically had to be within 24-hours!) and was still such a positive experience. We were able to bring in our own little speaker for our music which was really nice. Tips from me would be the post-surgery ward is the warmest place on earth so bring something nice and cool to wear inc. a fan if you have one. Plug sockets are really sparse, so bring an extension lead in your bag or really long cable to charge your phone. Stay on top of your pain meds post-surgery, taking them regularly even if you’re not in pain as it really helps! I had an elective section 8 weeks ago at the JR. I was told to be there at 7am and there were only two on the list, but something happened and I didn’t go in until midday: so beware there might be a delay in going to theatre! The actual procedure was great, the team were supportive, the anaesthetist was brilliant and they communicated throughout. As someone else said above the after care isn’t quite as good. Youre taken to the recovery ward where and baby get regular checks, but after a while you’re sort of left to your own devices. It’s difficult getting baby in and out the cot post section so don’t be afraid to use the bell!!! I had everything close to hand in separate bags so could easily guide the nurses to a bag. You do have to ask for help, my legs were still numb and my bubba had done a poo so I did need help changing her! My recovery was absolutely brilliant :) good luck! X

I had my baby there 5.5 months ago and they are incredible.
The midwives are so lovely. I rang the bell on the ward all the time and they helped with pain, getting out the bed etc, feeding, they helped with different positions etc.
it is warm, so take some lighter clothing to be comfortable.

I had my baby by emergency c section 8 weeks ago and the surgery team were fantastic. Just trust them and go with it. But the post surgery ward was absolutely boiling hot!

I had an emergency csection there 3 months ago. The surgery went really well and I felt pretty relaxed throughout. All I would say is they weren't great with getting pain relief and they also forgot to give me lunch. So all I can say is make sure you have some snacks to hand. Also it was really hot when I was there so if you have a handheld fan it might be nice. They did have a fan in the bit I was in but only one plug socket and the bed was plugged into that.
