I had my first OB appointment on Thursday, and I was able to see baby for the first time via transvaginal ultrasound. Baby was measuring exactly on time (8 weeks , 5 days), and I could visually see the heart beating. The doctor said everything looked great, but she never played any sound or measured the fetal heart rate. Is this normal? I’m not worried about the baby’s health, I just found it odd that my experience seems different from others.

I think unless you have an existing concern with the pregnancy, that’s something that you might need to ask specifically. I didn’t hear heartbeat at my 8 week scan with my first and it wasn’t offered. I’ve had a high risk second pregnancy (recurrent losses + subchorionic hematoma) also with IVF so you get more monitoring as a standard and therefore have had heart beat taken at 7w6d and 8w5d.
Using the Doppler also emits more energy and strain on the fetus and I think some doctors prefer not to do that unless they really have to.

I didn’t get to hear mine either but she told me it was 157 which was weird cause my last pregnancy I could hear the heartbeat

I heard the heartbeat at my 8 weeks during my first pregnancy this time she said they’re cracking down on certain things and it’s not considered safe to focus in on the heartbeat before 10 weeks. We saw it and she was able to visually track heart rate but we won’t hear it until the 12 week appointment

I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks due to cramping and they measured the heart rate, but I couldn’t hear. I asked to hear it at my 8 weeks ultrasound and the sonographer played it for me.
