So I’ve recently been reading about wake windows and need advice. My littlen is 5 weeks old and seems to be struggling to sleep in the day (he usually sleeps very well during the night). I didn’t know anything about wake windows until recently, are they important to follow and how do you work them out? My little boy usually feeds every 3-4 hours

Following this as I have no clue either! My little girl is 5 weeks tomorrow and feeds round every 3-4 hours too x

so glad I’m not the only one! X

Wake windows may work for some but all babies are so different. Some can stay awake for hours and still be happy while others can’t stay awake for more than 90 mins at a time. I never went by wake windows personally. I looks for sleeping cues. Pink eyebrows, rubbing eyes and certain grunt noises. I’ll put baby down and soon after 💤 Keep in mind that 5 weeks is still very early and it’s super normal for them not to sleep for more than 20-30 mins at a time. I would just be consistent with whatever you choose to do.

The guided average for wake windows for a 5 week old are around 60-90 mins. But It’s nothing really that you can control, if they don’t want to sleep then they won’t. You can try little methods to calm them down though. My LB will always fall asleep in the sling in the day and then I can take him out and put him down. Think he just likes the closeness to make him feel safe. Or white noise can be good too. It’s just to avoid them getting overstimulated and over tired. But if he’s sleeping very well at night then I wouldn’t say you have anything to worry about x

They're not particularly scientific. You can use them as a bit of a guide, but I really wouldn't tie yourself in knots about it. As they others said better to go off babies cues. I used them in the sense of knowing baby might be awake for 'about 90 minutes ish' but that was it. All babies are different too.

Your best bet is to figure out your own baby’s wake windows by timing how long they can go before you start seeing the cues in the comment above. My boys 7 weeks so his wake windows *should* be 60-90mins, but he starts giving cues around 30-45mins so that’s when I put him down for a nap.
Since I’ve figured this out he is a lot more content as I think he was getting overtired because I was keeping him up for too long! Every baby is different so just go with whatever works for yours, but yeah I’d say wake windows are important just don’t take the guides as gospel

Im winging it to be honest - I do keep an eye on how long he’s been awake (I use the huckleberry app to track everything) but I use it as more of a confirmation ie. If I think he’s giving me cues I’ll check the app to see if we’re about right and usually we are. I think the guidance is that until 12 weeks their wake windows should be about 45-90 minutes. But to be honest my boy will sometimes have days where he stays awake for 2+ hours in an evening and is happy to (won’t go down no matter how hard we try) and then has a mammoth sleep for the first half of the night. xx

We're very similar to you. 5 week old boy, struggles to sleep in the day, much better at night.
Supposedly his wake windows should be 60-90 minutes but he will stay awake for 4-5 hours on the regular. It's exhausting!

I think at 5 weeks they start to go through a ‘leap’ which means they are learning new skills ect which may keep them awake during the day, my little boy is hit and miss with sleeping during the day now!
Im lucky to get 45 mins! X
