Startled

My baby had this incident twice when he randomly froze up and stretched his arms out like he was scared. I took him to the hospital to make sure it wasn’t a seizure. They did a CT scan which came out normal and so did his bloodwork. We had to follow up with a neurologist to do an eeg i guess for more accuracy? Has anyone else gone through this? The doctor at the hospital said most likely not a seizure and maybe he was just extra startled. Idk.

It's completely normal . It's called startle reflux :) very common in most of the babies! Don't worry.

is it normal for him to hold his breath too?

Mine does it and will hold his breath and make a noise like he’s in pain and let’s go. I was told it was normal 🤷🏻‍♀️

My little guy does this too. And he cry/screams and turns red and then when I put my hand on his chest and tell him it’s okay then he will relax.

I was told it can be a gas bubble too.

Hi yes! This is not startle reflux! Imo it’s sandifers, my daughter was having what looked like infantile spasms we went to children’s emergency bc she turned blue and her eeg was normal. Sandifers is a rare complication of GERD that babies grow out of. Best of luck with neurology! My girl would get so tense with her arms up and in her face that she’d rock side to side, especially if your little ones eyes go upwards and to the right. It’s super scary bc she’d scream after and cry like I’d never heard before but it gets better once you know what it is.

what was the treatment for your daughter or did she eventually grow out of it?

She’s only 4 months now and she was diagnosed in late august, we see neurology for a follow up in the beginning of nov. she was prescribed rice cereal in her bottles to help keep her milk down, and/or food thickener. if that hadn’t have worked she’d be put on meds. She’s doing good at the moment, she only ever had rice 1-2 times a day bc I didn’t have the heart to give it to her under 4 months. The food thickener was better anyways because it could just go in her bottles, rice clogged even with extra holes and a bigger nipple flow. I had to give her the rice in a pacifier medicine dispenser. That was terrible lol. It’s mostly abt the pain to your little ones under developed esophagus and taking steps to change that so she can eat without pain and keep her weight.

If you’re worried about it and it is a problem with her eating, you should ask your doctors about a referral to your areas early intervention. for me, they came to the house to evaluate her, she passed in all areas except eating and early intervention was a lot more helpful bc pediatricians can’t do much without drastic weight loss and I wanted to avoid that.
