Newborn Fever

My baby is 6 weeks old and my toddler picked up a bug last week. The only time we were out was all 3 of us to the pediatrician and a quick grocery run last Tuesday.

On Thursday my toddler spiked a fever that ran out in about 24 hrs, she’s had a cough since then but nothing bad back to playing (a cold I assumed)

On Friday I had a scratchy throat that turned into a sore throat the following day and then that night I started getting a fever overnight. I have my baby bedside and didn’t have any other symptoms before the fever started besides sore throat. That next morning I started masking and have been since. I’m
Breastfeeding and hoping somehow baby won’t catch it. I still have a fever and now I have a cough and running nose.

I am having intense anxiety around going to the hospital if he gets a fever (Mostly for the spinal tap) My ped said he has to go to the ER if he has a fever “even though we know it’s whatever cold your toddler brought home”.

I’m not trying to be a negligent mom but if he does get a fever, I’m thinking I may wait to see if it gets worse, I would hate to subject him (and me) to all those tests (and possibly pick up something else in the ER, just to be sent home to “monitor” it) when the pediatrician basically already said they would be unnecessary. Is there a chance that this cold could be meningitis? I thought meningitis was different than a cold.

Anyone ever waited it out and trusted your gut when you knew the source? We have not left the house otherwise since the trip to the ped for his checkup last week.

I think the reason you need to take a newborn in if they have a fever is that the fever itself can be very dangerous at that age, so the source of the fever isn't the main concern. Hopefully your baby will be fine, and is getting your antibodies through breast milk, but if they do develop a fever, I personally would not risk it and would take them in.

interesting, thanks for sharing. I was told the opposite (that it’s not the fever that’s the concern but rather where it comes from because it could be meningitis). I’ll ask more questions but hopefully I don’t have to find out

Leah is incorrect about the reasoning- but correct in her advice!

However fevers in newborns are dangerous because any infection virulent enough to cause a fever MIGHT be something really damaging- like meningitis, and baby has had no vaccines yet for some of the most dangerous viruses like
Mumps, measles, and Rubella. So they want to act fast and rule out the viruses and bacteria’s that could be potential fatal to a newborn

How’s it going? Are you guys OK?

thanks for checking on us! I had a fever for 3 days and have had a hacking cough/runny nose. I masked when my cough started and have been wearing it since. Horrible at night but he sleeps right next to my bed so I figured that my efforts would have been for nothing if I just cough on him all night. So far he hasn’t developed any symptoms/fever so I’m hoping we somehow missed this one 🤞🏼. I’m exhausted though and need a back massage- I’ve been holding him for going on 5 days now and he’s a big boy (13 lbs already 🙃)
