Definition of a SAHM

My definition of a SAHM is one who does not work in a paid capacity of any sort. Their sole “job” is to look after/raise the child/ren.

In my mind a stay at home mum would be the mum doesn’t do any ‘paid’ work outside of being a parent, but essentially their work is providing care and looking after the children and home, but just don’t get paid for it x

I’m a stay at home mom who does work from home about 6h a week on average bringing about 4-5k a month. I do consider myself a stay at home mom as 6h is nothing and I spend the majority of my time taking care of my toddler. I work while she naps (time that I can’t spend taking care of her anyway). If tomorrow I get 0 orders at the end of the day I’m still just a stay at home mom.
For example there’s so many Homesteading SAHMs that homeschool their kids and do all… if they sell some eggs and veggies on the stall in front of their house that doesn’t disqualify them from being a stay at home mom lol.
Also idk why we have to separate moms like that. Are we more special if we’re just a stay at home moms as last time I checked moms that stay at home to take care of their toddler and work from home have it even harder than SAHMs or working moms as their kid goes to daycare.

You might say that Work from home mom category works better, but a lot of parents work from home and never take care of their kids of send them to daycare and work from home. I guess if we have to put anyone in a category we need something in between as neither one is fully correct.

My definition of a SAHM is one who does not get paid for work, whether inside or outside the home, and is at home to take care of the kids, house, etc. I wish I was a SAHM.

Haha nah. Also there’s other freelancer platforms like Fiverr: I know of Freelancer (I haven’t worked there in 10years- used to do graphic design work) and Upwork but I don’t have any experience there to recommend them.
One tip that I can give: find a niche otherwise the competition is fierce especially in categories where experience or diploma isn’t needed. In my field I have like 5 competitors and they’re from India and clients really want to hire US sellers so realistically I have no competition so I’m offering the same service for more money.
Example of a niche…maybe: blueprint and material list for kids Montessori furniture. You design it once and sell forever. Or you can accept custom offers and design furniture by your client’s instructions.

Stay at home is sort of what it is in the description. You stay home with your kids, whether that is exclusively what you do or if you also work in some capacity while you're home. Like if you work and call it work from home, what do you call it if you don't work and take your kids on outings all the time and aren't actually at home... An at children's museum mom that day and an at library mom the other day? Why does working while at home with your kids require a different description or title? I think it's an old title that could evolve like the "job" description changes, but sahm doesn't mean you don't do a million other things(clean house, cook, pay bills, etc) and can only raise your kids exclusively, it can include so much more just like it has always.

For the most part, a sahm mom to me is someone who doesn't work or only works part time during the hours baby is napping or at school. I think there are some people who intend to stay home because they want to but don't have the financial means to do so and seem to try to make up the gap by WFH or some other form of income like Uber, DoorDash, etc. but still use the same terminology. It gets a little fuzzy with people who try to WFH full-time and also be sahms, which is why some companies straight up outline "remote work is not childcare policies."

Sometimes it has nothing to do with finances and not being able to afford to be just a SAHM…. Sometimes people want to contribute to the family budget, earn their own money, build a business or continue their career just from home.
My husband makes more than enough and we can totally live well with that money where we live (4 bed house and 2 new cars), but I choose to work as otherwise I would probably get depressed feeling like all I am is a mom living just for my family ignoring my dreams. Not to mention if something happens to my husband I would like to know that I can support my family. I don’t ever want to be in a position where let’s say my husband passes away and there’s 10 years gap in my resume so the only job I can get is minimal wage that can’t cover my mortgage.
Sometimes people work just because they like it and not always just because they’re struggling with money. :)

yep, that's why I said some people! I choose to work as well because I'm a remote software engineer and my career is important to me (though I'm not a SAHM, my husband and I WFH but our daughter is in daycare). Lots of different options!
