My toddler only says a few words 20 mos

My toddler has said a total of 10-11 words very sporadically. She sometimes listens to me and sometimes ignores me. She sometimes wants to be playing and doesn’t care what I want lol Other than that everything is normal. If I’m in a room and I yell her name she will come running. She eats on her own idk… Some people said who don’t know her that she might be autistic as she likes to run around and explore everything and they see she sometimes won’t respond to me. Maybe she is …I don’t know but I’m worried you guys. I want to love my child even if she gets diagnosed with autism but I feel angry at the possibility. Please give me words of wisdom as I go through the diagnosing process 😞

Hi! I totally understand where you’re coming from .
My brother is “ autistic” but he just gets a lot of sensory over load and didn’t start saying any words until 3!
I think it’s more common now for kids to be diagnosed with autism because we know what to look for. There’s probably so so so many people around you that are autistic but just haven’t been diagnosed, that’s really how common it is. And there are a ton of different severities and different types . Like my son spins a lot and side eyes a lot of things so we will be getting him screened because that’s signs of sensory issues! I hope this gives you some ease!

My brother who has autism and dyslexia is fully functioning, is super normally social, and does anything just like anyone else! 💕

That doesn’t sound like autism. My 20 month old says about 5 words. He has a speech delay but he’s not autistic. It’s normal for toddlers to not wanna listen to their parents. And for some to be slow learners. They’re just exploring the world and testing limits!

My toddler is 20 months barley says more than 5 words but I don’t think that’s a problem. Depending on the environment children talk when they want. My daughter understands everything I say. Know how to ask for what she wants but she doesn’t speak words that could make a sentence. Every kid is different so I wouldn’t worry about it.

My son is 20 months and he says a good handful of words, only around people who he knows well. I found out that around this age we get to see a shyness trait. Some kids are shy while others aren’t. I found out that I started speaking a lot when I was 2-2 1/2 years old. Growing up I was extremely shy and I was quite student. My son shows no traits of being autism. He has my personality to a T. Even does the same things I did at his age. I did certain tests on my son (the doc recommended them) to make sure he was on track and turns out he’s somewhat advanced. He’s not autistic at all, just shy and cautious around stranger.

I hope that’s the same with me. My daughter is stubborn and an explorer. She is curious about everything so if she is interested in something she just saw she just doesn’t care what any adult says. I hope it’s her personality. If not, I just hope I can be strong and help my daughter advance.

yeah I think so too. She’s also an only child. It’s hard to know what to compare her to lol
Well I’ve seen a few toddlers that don’t talk and some that are super advanced in this little class I have her in which confuses me more.

She sounds healthy and safe. Confidence and independence are clear signs of this. 🫶🏻
