Bronchitis/RSV

This has just happened to me. My 7 month old went to the gp with the same symptoms and had a clear chest, the next day ended up taking him a&e as his temp suddenly dropped below 35 and he was really struggling with fluids and really chesty. They diagnosed him with bronchiolitis and to just ensure he gets his fluids. He was discharged and advised to stay home, advised to go back if he started really struggling to breathe, big drop in feeding or a temp.
Day 4 is always the worst.
However if in doubt ring 111 and get advice. Hope that helps x

He was in NICU so always worry more, his temps been ok, might just call for advice, thank you x

I would go straight to hospital, and get little one assessed especially if you see head bobbing whilst baby breaths.

We had covid last month & my little one was really ill with it. He’s had a cough since. I called my gp on Monday & she asked me to take him to have a chest x ray done. I took him Tuesday morning. Hospital called me that evening telling me he has a minor pneumothorax (a collapse in his lung) & that he needed to go a&e. He was seen straight away & thankfully his oxygen levels were 100. We have a repeat x ray tomorrow to see if its healing! Always trust your instinct. If you think something is wrong, call 111 or go to the hospital. I am so thankful my go heard my concerns rather than fobbing him off with sayings its viral or just gave antibiotics. X

Hello 🙋‍♀️ Children's Nurse here. Good call in ringing 111 - it absolutely is never a waste of time. I did the same with my little one who had RSV, bronchiolitis and tonsillitis as well last week.

Does it look like baby is sucking in under ribs when they breathe, and making any gasping noise or wheezing? If any worries around that, then go to A&E. Are you able to count how many times they breathe in over the course of 60 seconds?

The struggle with feeds might be because they are under the weather, and its also very hard to feed from a bottle with a snotty nose! Have you got a snot sucker? You can buy vapour rub suitable for 6mo+, plug in wall calpol and a humidifier to help over the winter months. ❤️

@Becka no he's not sucking in as bad as before, they're sending paramedics just to check him over due to his age etc x

Go back to your gp! My little one had a cough that went away and then came back two weeks later worse and the GP gave us antibiotics, cleared it up x

Paramedics came, checked him and were happy for us to stay home, il be ringing my gp tomoro tho for sure x

Always call 111 if your gut is telling you to. My baby has bronchiolitis and what I was told to look out for was the air being sucked in in her neck and around her ribs as this meant she was working hard to breath, we were sent to a&e but when they checked her oxygen levels they were fine so no oxygen needed. They also said it was important to ensure she was having wet nappies and taking at least 50% of her usual feeds. Make sure you give lots of water too. If it is bronchiolitis then I’m afraid you have a long road ahead, we’re nearly 1 month in now and still not better 😔 so stock up on olbas oil as it’s been amazing for us and warm baths and steam help, if you can just sit in the bathroom with the shower on hot this should help x
