Toddler eating

My little boy is 3 and up until now we have been very rubbish at getting him to feed himself dinner- after a day at work, we didnt have the mental strength to cope with the tantrums (bad parents i know!) so with nursery approaching, we got him a table and chair and he happily fed himself. Today, however he refused to feed himself-so my question is how firm do I go with this? He refused his dinner and his yoghurt. He did have a snack before bed (he’d always have a little snack) but I didn’t offer to do him anything else. Because he doesn’t communicate that well, it feels cruel but I think I’d be creating a monster if I gave in? Thoughts?

How long have you been doing the table for and do you have you food with him?

@Kimberley been doing it for lunch for a couple weeks at home (longer at my mums!) but only started dinner and breakfast at the weekend! He’s been in a highchair up to then!

@Emma when is he starting nursery? Tbh don’t put to much pressure on it, he will get up walk around don’t make it a chore for him. Nursery will help you along with this too but try doing activities at the table also together.. puzzles etc so he doesn’t feel like it’s a chore sitting there

@Kimberley he isn’t starting until January. Oh that’s good to hear, I didn’t know if it was bad to distract him from his dinner but what you say makes sense! Today has been a total success but he was starving cos he had no lunch! 😂 Think I definitely need to stop stressing to get everything done before nursery when, they’ll probably support me through things!

@Emma yeee don’t put pressure on yourself, it’s great to have bits in place but honestly when they see the other children following the routine they just naturally do it! He’ll be fine😊

@Kimberley Thankyou so much! I thought I’d have stopped me such a worrier about him after 3 years! 😂
