He has a very small appetite, and he only takes 4 - to 5-oz of milk at a time. It seems he is just unable to eat. I offer him things, but he takes a bite and then just spits it out. This could be partly my fault as I was spoon feeding him a lot at the beginning as he had a bottle aversion, and I had to get milk in him through porridge. He seems okay ish with melty things but toast, soft veg, fruit, pasta, he either gags or just point blank spits it out. Do I just carry on with purees and still offer food, too? Thanks

Some babies can find associating purees with more solid food confusing.. purees promote sucking (like milk in a bottle) rather than chewing which is what you would want with solids.. so when you give him both it may be that he doesn't know how to handle the solids properly.. one way of addressing this would be to take purees out completely :) x

Completely normal for them to gag and spit things out, you just need to keep persevering. We've done blw from the beginning and he still occasionally gags and spits bits out x
@Jade he spits everything out, lol. No one warned me that it would be this hard 🤣 x
@Isa I would eliminate purees, but he doesn't have much milk, so I think he probably needs the food too x

How much milk does he have in the day? Tasting is still eating at this age and he will learn to eat more and more.. as hard as it is watching, babies will not starve themselves and it will get better x
@Isa 16-20ozs. I just panic because he lost weight once due to an undiagnosed dairy allergy and bottle aversion. He dropped 3 centiles before anyone actually listened to me x

Of course! You just want your baby healthy and fed! The amount of milk he is taking is only slightly less than the recommended amount so it's not too bad.. hope you manage to sort this all out soon!
thank you x

I was so concerned about my boys tongue control ability as he was BLW from 6m with some self feeding purée but he always struggled to get the food to the back of his mouth. He would chew and then spit out. He randomly started swallowing solids a couple of weeks ago! Keep preserving and they will get it . X
