Changing mat leave date

Hi all.
I'm struggling massively with work and life. I haven't done any preparation for baby and I feel so overwhelmed!

I originally put my mat leave in at work for the week before the baby is due and taking 2 weeks holiday before. However now I'm thinking it will be much bigger for my mental health to bring my leave date in to Jan and use holiday to finish after Christmas. Has anyone else changed their maternity start date? Were your work supportive?

I completely understand how you feel, I’ve been feeling quite similar after a week or so off. I’ve a toddler also and I just feel I’ve no time to do anything and am tired!!!🙈
I’ve done the exact same thing as you as well, although maternity leave starting the day before my due date with two weeks off before.

Yes I also have a toddler and just feel so overwhelmed. I'm going to ask tomorrow so I'm within the 28 days notice you have to give and hope they're supportive

You’re meant to give 28 days notice but I work in HR and would never enforce that if anyone was struggling! They would only end up going off sick and then maternity would start automatically anyway within 4 weeks of due date

@Emma thank you. I have sent off the email this morning and followed the 28 days notice. I'm giving 8 weeks notice of the change, if they'll allow me to use annual leave. If not I still have time to give 28 days! But yes honestly I think I would just end up going on sick leave and having to finish early anyway.

My manager has been supportive so far when I've expressed that I'm stressed and losing sleep. Hoping she's understanding of the change 🤞🏻

My midwife encouraged me to finish earlier if I need it. She said it’s important to look after yourself before the birth, and whilst it might mean losing a few weeks at the back end, you’ll be pleased you did it. I hope they agree and it helps you feel more relaxed x
