Can I take L-lysine during second trimester?
I struggle with cold sores, which pop up the second my immune system is not 100%
L-lysine is a supplement that I have taken for years which have truly helped control the outbreak (and when one does pop up, reduces recovery time). After finding out I was pregnant I stopped taking all supplements other than those prescribed for pregnancy.
As I wrote this post I have a cold sore developing and it sucks 😔 hoping someone can advise if taking the supplement would be ok?

I also take them for cold sores so I looked it up and I don't believe you should take them as they can affect liver and kidney function. It seems there isn't loads of research into them though. Personally I'm going to avoid anything that doesn't have research saying it's definitely ok. You can always check with your doctor though

the research is what I found too 😔 it’s why I went off them… but sheesh- cold sores just suck.

They are horrible and I'm always so paranoid when I get them about spreading them! Good news at least is that cold saw cream seems to be safe. I also love the patches, they definitely make them look less gross if you get them on before they burst

Cold sores are the worst! I don’t get them very frequently and feel free to ignore this if it’s not something that works for you - but gargling salt water always seems to help mine clear up? Not sure if that’s helpful or not but I’m so sorry you’re suffering!

I am willing to give anything a shot 😊 thanks

It is safe, though if you go to your doctor they can usually give aciclovir during pregnancy if you're struggling because the hormones/immune suppression cause sooooo many more outbreaks and many find supplements don't work anymore. You take it each day and then don't have to worry about another outbreak while on it 😅

Thank you! I will definitely chat to my doctor about this!

Get lysine balm from H&B instead. I suffer bad and am the same as you and lather my lips with the balm to stop them. Immediately kills the virus off and stops spreading

I get very bad cold sores and had one at 10 weeks. Managed to wait for it to pass eating lots of berries. I have read that Lysine is not recommended in pregnancy so did not want to risk it. Acyclovir might be a better option but check with pharmacist or go
