Flat head

Feeling like such a horrible FT Mom. My little girl is almost 3 months old. She absolutely hates tummy time and has since day one. We do use a breast feeding pillow and she seems to like that but not for long. Of there anything else I can do or will it eventually go away. Breaks my heart. I’ve also tried positioning her head side to side when sleeping and she always goes back to face to the sky position. Please help like I said I feel like a horrible mom. The lump on her head is a hematoma (peds appointment finally next week)

If she won't tolerate tummy time, I recommend as much baby wearing as possible. You should see what the pediatrician says, you might have options for things to help reshape her head, from physical therapy to a helmet

You're not a horrible mom. They may give her a helmet for a bit. On the OPP side of the spectrum I felt like a bad mom because I couldn't keep my son on his back, he started flipping to his side and tummy at 2 days old.

Tummy time on your chest or lap counts too.

I done tummy time on chest as my boy hated it
Now he's not too bad

I know some people do daily massages as a form of PT. Would deffo look into it first though, and speak with the pediatrician x

My son didn’t love tummy time for a while but I kept telling my husband to treat it “like his life depends on it” (I’d say that constantly to him) and we’d keep him on his tummy while he fussed for a little longer each time. He’s just finally getting to where he’ll tolerate 5 min straight now (15 wk old) and he’s holding his head at 90 degrees for longer than a few secs. I make sure to put him on his tummy 1-2x every wake window and he’ll getting more and more comfortable in that position.

I say that with empathy for your situation and you should definitely consult your pediatrician but it’s never too late to keep trying more tummy time to help with head shape. And helmet or not, once baby starts sitting up on their own or crawling you’ll no longer have so much time on their back to worry about.

Good luck!

I had the same issue with my baby. He hated tummy time and wouldn’t keep his head in the same position when sleeping. He had a noticeable flat head on one side. I was beside myself with guilt and worried that it would be permanent. I contemplated a helmet and even made the appointment to go but the thought of him being uncomfortable in a helmet upset me too. I was reassured by an NHS doctor that it would sort itself out once he started to keep his head up and roll over etc and I trusted her. My son is 16 months old and the flat spot is tiny and totally unnoticeable now. You wouldn’t know anything was ever wrong. Just get her checked with the GP ☺️

I second raqi… add wearing your baby more and skin to skin when your laying down and baby and laying on your chest.

You’re doing great. You’re already an amazing mom for even trying to fix it.

Laying on the chest is also a form of tummy time!

You also got a lot of good advice!

Check out Baby Begin on Instagram. They have so much info on flat head and tummy time tips. They can also do virtual consults if you want.

I lay my little one on my legs and burp him. I put him face down in my arm while carrying him around the house. Lay him on my stomach and recline and have starting contest. While playing on the ground I get to his level and lay on my stomach with him and talk.

I would get into a pediatric physio asap. Keep doing what you're doing trying to turn her face side to side when sleeping. And when awake, instead of on her back, put her on her sides with a roll behind her so she stays put and toys in front of her

Sleeping on the tummy will help if she and you can tolerate it. I would nap mine on her tummy during the day when I could watch her.

Don’t feel bad, the same
Thing happened with my son. I
Opted not to go with the helmet and once he started sleeping on his side/tummy the issue mostly resolved itself. He still has a small flat spot but nothing worrisome. Don’t be so hard on yourself

Thank you everyone! 🥰 Paediatrician said that she’s has seen worse but has seen better for her flatness. Has recommended ways for her to like tummy time. She ruled out that Torticollis isn’t playing a role. Unfortunately she does have to go get X-rays done to make sure her hematoma when it hardened didn’t fuse her skull together where it shouldn’t be. So fingers crossed.
