Things to avoid post cerclage?

I’ve had the cerclage done at 20 weeks. Is there anything I should avoid other than sex? Can I return to normal activities? My doctor hasn’t mentioned bed rest or anything but I’m paranoid….

With my first cerclage I was told no baths and no swimming incase of infection. Second cerclage when I asked about exercise I was told to take it easy, but to be safe I’m sticking to walking.

Hi Nida and Nadia, I am 20 weeks on Saturday and having my cerclage done tomorrow. My cervix is not funnelling or open although it is short at 19mm. After the op did you stay in bed / feet up for a week? Have you been doing any house work/ walking etc? Hard to know what is right and not! What did your cervix measure before? Thank you!

hey, I stayed in bed for a couple of days as had some cramping then I really took it easy for a few weeks. The doctor had said any exercise to wait until I was 20 weeks so I just started doing some walks each day then which was 4/5weeks later). It’s very hard to know what’s right so I’m just minimising risk as mush as poss. Mine was 24mm at 16 weeks. Good luck for tomorrowx

Thank you Nadia. It’s hard knowing what to do. Do you work from home now and sit down to work? Hopefully in January I can work from home sitting down or do you have legs up most of the time? Did you and do you do any cooking/ washing etc? When you say you took it really easy does that mean not going out the house at all and lying down most of the time? Xx

So I’m in the UK they don’t recommend bedrest, I still go about my usual day to day (cooking, washing, cleaning etc) I just don’t lift anything too heavy.
I currently go in to the office twice a week and work from home the rest of it. This is my second pregnancy with cerclage and in the first one I had bought almost like a little breakfast table to work on my bed from, that way I’m not sat bolt upright which gives me a back ache. I think though once I get heavier I will ask to work from home all the time as I have read they don’t recommend standing/sitting for long periods.

I am in the UK too! When did you start going about your daily usually day, how long after the op? I am going to get one of those bed desks too for any time I need to lie down in between calls etc. I am worried about being housebound/ bed bound so hopefully I can do gentle things like walk to car and drive to coffee with a friend where I can sit etc. How many weeks are you now? X

I’m sure you will be able to - I think you just need to listen to your body and do what feels right. I think a couple of weeks after as I was still getting a bit crampy here and there. I’m 23 weeks now, I did go full term with my daughter had the stitch out at 37 weeks and she arrived at week 38 x

Thank you, that’s good to know. Did you stay in bed for 2 weeks post op then? Worried about going up and down our stairs as well, did you wait to do that? X

Avatar

No I think I only stayed in bed for a couple of days, I think your body will tell you x

Thank you . Sorry last question, were you given preventative antibiotics after surgery? I am worried about infection causing labour so would like some incase although not sure if they do that in UK? Xx

Avatar

Yup they gave me antibiotics to take after Xx

Had my cerclage insertion today. Cervix measuring short at 7mm. We were very lucky with the specialist we were referred too as a couple were unable to do the procedure given how short it was. I’m on modified bed rest until my post op on Tuesday and will revaluate then. No stairs, no lifting over 20 pounds, no flying for the duration of pregnancy and more importantly stress management 😅
