My sister has a little boy who is 9 weeks old. He’s got poor weight gain and they are now suspecting a dairy allergy. He has been prescribed dairy free milk and my sister has been advised to stop breastfeeding either for 3-4weeks to remove dairy from her system or to stop completely..
My question is - if you were moved onto dairy free formula for a suspected dairy allergy how long did it take for you to see an improvement?
Baby has dropped from 75th centile to the 1st so they are concerned about his weight.
My little boy had reflux but nothing in comparison to the amount of vomiting from my nephew!
Thank you - any advice is really appreciated xxx

This is such bad advice. Please tell your sister if she wants to keep breastfeeding she can and she should immediately give up dairy and not replace with soy. It will be out of her milk within 24 hours and she can feed through. Babies gut will take 6-8 weeks to heal depending on the damage. If the baby had multiple allergens it could take a while to figure them out which is why some will choose formula. Dairy free formula is a big learning curve too tho as there is different ones there is hydrolysed formulas which is first stage and can contain whey or casin broken down so baby can do ok and then have a build up reaction and may need an amino acid formula. The problem is that these formulas can be difficult to introduce to breastfeeding babies as they don’t taste nice and can be difficult to get to take which can lead to feeding aversions etc. obviously they are live saving to some babies but don’t be forced down a difficult route if not wanting to go that way.

I’m breastfeeding my second allergy baby. Both of my children are dairy and soy free. My little boy it took a while to figure out and so he had bad reflux, colic and bleeding from bottom etc and took a while to heal from it. My daughter I cut them straight out the day I got out of hospital and trialled them separately when she was a few weeks old, she had reactions so I continued to cut them out. Happy to answer any questions about their allergies, the diet or breastfeeding. It’s a learning curve but totally worth it in my experience

Is it worth getting in touch with your sisters lactation specialist / someone from the infant feeding team to get advice on continuing breastfeeding? Not sure who gave this advice but I wouldn't trust it! Definitely get a second opinion from a specialist on the breastfeeding advice

3-4 weeks will dry her milk up completely..
He was reviewed by 2 separate was paediatric registrars who gave her the same advice as he was also tested for pyloric stenosis x

But paediatricians aren't breastfeeding specialists. I've come across loads of posts about babies with dairy allergies on here and none have been told to stop breastfeeding? If your sister isn't bothered about continuing to breastfeed then fair enough but if she is, stopping breastfeeding can be really upsetting and trigger feelings of grief and depression. So it would be worth checking the advice with a breastfeeding specialist (not a paediatrician) to make sure it's correct x

It’s been said already but absolutely she doesn’t need to stop breastfeeding. Allergens disappear from breast milk within a few hours, though it can take time for baby to heal. Free to Feed on Instagram/website is an excellent resource - recommend looking up. She had loads of info ♥️♥️
