Bad experience talking to the doctor about my birth plan

I’ve left the hospital today confused and annoyed

My GD have been under controlled, baby’s weight is fine but yet the doctor said that I will be induced at 39 weeks and expected me to make a decision there and then without any info, feel like I’ve been forced to say yes

I was told that If I go away to think about it, the “date” will be delayed so I had to decide now

I received no reassurance, he was suppose to give me a blood form at the end which he totally forgot 😠

You have the right to wait and you don’t have to make a decision straight away. I would call up again and ask for another appointment where you can ask pro and cons and especially why they want to induce you. You shouldn’t feel forced at all

I’ll give them a call

I first waited 3 hours to be seen because they had a ‘back log’ and in the end that’s all I got from doctor Faizul at royal derby

It felt like a waste of waiting around

Oh and he said the reason being is that they have to induce women that have GD

When asked about pro and cons, he gave me a small booklet about induction and told me to read instead of him telling me about it. I just bought the booklet home with me as I couldn’t read it while he was sat there waiting for a decision 🤨

It's widely known that if you have GD but it's well controlled that that on itself is not a reason to induce labour. Just like age alone is not, unless you have other complications. I have GD btw.

Are you on any meds for it or are you diet controlled? And do you have any other high risk elements?

If not then I really feel like this doctor is the type of clinician who gives them a bad name 😢.

Dr Sarah Wickham is really respected and she's written a whole book about being induced. This article is great prep for chats with your doctor about induction. https://www.sarawickham.com/articles-2/five-questions-to-ask-if-youre-offered-induction-of-labour/

Also, remember that it's your body and and 100% your choice. No one can force you to do anything, no matter how much they make it sound like they're in charge. YOU are in charge.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against induction for the right reasons but induction rates in the UK are crazy high atm and people have the right to be given the information they request and the time to digest it before they make a decision about their own body and their own child.

Best of luck lovely! ❤️❤️❤️

I was told they may try to induce at 39 weeks just incase it doesn't work and they have the chance to do it a second time before 40 weeks and 6 days as they don't like to let you go further.
But defo not right to have you making a decision there and then!

Why are they trying to induce you?

I’m going with a birthing center and they said they can do a sweep around 39 weeks to see if they can help labor start as to not go over 41+ weeks. But it’s not something I HAVE to do.
Only if I want.
This makes me even more glad I didn’t go with a regular clinic/hospital. I was afraid they’d be pushy.
I went a birthing center! I’m sorry about your experience

I’m on diabetic insulin and metformin tablets, in my last scan baby measured big and today she measures normal so don’t understand what happened last time 🤷🏻‍♀️

Last scan they said if baby measures big again then I will be induced, they did not say because of medication I’m on

Other than medication, there’s no high risk elements

Thank you for sending me the article

they want to induce me because they don’t want baby to be exposed too much to the diabetic insulin

Call them for your blood forms.
If you don’t want to be induced in the day then don’t go but Atleast it’s booked incase 🤷🏼‍♀️ xx

If you have diabetes of any type they induce because of higher risk of stillbirth. Placenta decline happens earlier in diabetes no matter how well controlled and so once your full term at 37 weeks they don’t see the point in letting the risk increase with each week. So I’ll be induced at 37 (probably abit before) because mine has gone beyond control but you’re able to go to 49 based on your good control but anything more than that is just added risk of baby not getting what they need from the placental decline.

from what I've read (from many sources) if GD is well controlled and you're not seeing any further complications or on any meds for it then there is no higher risk to baby in reality. And also, the stillbirth risk does increase yes, but it's from like 0.01% to 0.02% so it's really unhelpful to throw that sort of information around without actually using the figures 🥴.

My GD is diet controlled and my levels are very very normal. Induction itself holds other risks which could be higher than my GD, so you really do have to do your research. It's not a blanket thing.

@Shabina in your circumstances however induction may be the best thing because you are on two types of meds for it including insulin, and that sounds like it may present a medical reason to induce and get baby here as quickly and safely as possible. Get the information you need and make the decision. You'll feel impowered that YOU'VE made the decision, even if induction is it - which it may well be! And then you can go into your birth with confidence ❤️❤️❤️.

I think the main thing to note here is not what course of action to take, but that the doctor didn't do a good job (at all) of presenting you with YOUR options so that YOU could make an informed decision based on medical advice and coming from a caring, respectful professional physician - which is often the case 😢.

Get the information you need and then make the best decision for you and baby. My advice would be to not let the bad experience with the doctor affect you making the right and safest decision.

If all else fails just ask them to speak to you on the level and like a human being!

Best of luck my love 💕

Avatar

noted thank you, that’s what my main reason is that it felt like the decision was just chucked on me instead of sitting down and discussing my options without knowing the pros and cons

I’m going to call them today for some more info on induction

Avatar

it’s not unhelpful when it’s from my consultant and nhs website. It’s facts. I didn’t say how much the increase was but it is an increase and that’s the reason why they do it to be safe than sorry. But next time I’ll Google instead like you
