Boy moms with long hair

My son turned a year old on Jan 6th. I have not cut or trim his since birth. I’ve been wanting to go grow it out for him so I can braid it. Anyway, it’s barely at shoulder length with some short hairs at the temple. I fixed his hair today with a braid down the middle and two braids on each side which came out like pig tails after I tied. When ppl mistake my baby for a girl I just go let it go usually. But tonight my son’s dad made a comment about the his hair and it just doesn’t sit right with me anymore. I’m thinking about getting him a haircut? Or should I just shrug the comment off and keep on growing it out? Or how do you style it?
