Anti reflux

Hi has anyone swapped formula to anti reflux without asking a gp? My little girl was given infant gaviscon as she’s sick during every feed, she is gaining weight but her feeds are a nightmare, she’s irritable through out, screams when not drinking the milk and goes bright red and hates being burped. I’m at my wits ends now as it’s so frustrating seeing her not enjoying her milk. I have anti reflux milk in as this is what I thought it was before they gave the gaviscon, would I be okay to just give her a bottle of it? I’m certain it’s the milk being too thin for her tummy. We have been to the docs buts they gave the gaviscon first. Tia

Mine suffered a lot with colic and constipation and I changed to comfort formula without asking or even saying to the gp or health advisor because I couldn’t stand watching him in pain, when we had the first gp appointment I told our doctor and she said I done what I felt was best for the baby and to just let her know if in any circumstance was getting worse… he got so much better that after 2 months I changed him back to normal formula and he’s doing great! Sometimes you just need to go with your gut and do what you think it’s best for baby and monitor, if it does get worse than you should report to gp. Reflux and comfort formula usually have nutritional values very similar to normal one it’s just easier to digest and thicker so it helps them to keep it down.

I did it worked wonders for our boy, but now I use carobel in his regular milk it’s just a milk thickener powder and that works just as well!

i’m debating this as my LG is really bad with reflux but didn’t realise you could get reflux milk. I’m at my 6 week appointment tomorrow so was going to ask

We had Gaviscon from GP and it made our LO so constipated. Solved the reflux but with every poo he cry’s so much and screams the house down, goes bright red and scrunches. So so hard to see. So, we took him off Gaviscon and switched to SMA Anti reflux and it has worked wonders. No more shouty poos! And reflux is better. Just don’t use both at same time x

Thank you everyone! That’s reassuring, I’m going to do her next feed with it. Can I ask, may sound silly lol but is it prepared the same? I have 2+ mam bottles so I’m going to use them as the teat is bigger, is this right thing to do? Also I made up a bottle of it a few weeks ago (didn’t give it) and it was lumpy as hell, is there a specific way with this formula? Tia xx

My LO is 6 weeks x

I used the cow and gate anti reflux, I used a size 2 mam teat and it was fine, you also have to mix it with warm water not hot otherwise it goes lumpy! So I would fill up 3 ounces with cool boiled water and top up to 5 ounces with boiling water and it would be the right temperature, if you have a prep machine you can just press the button twice so you get the hotshot and cool water and then add the formula (you don’t have to put the formula in hot water to kill off the bacteria for some reason) but it will depend with formula you’re using I think they all have slightly different directions

@Beth thank you! Iv jsut made one up and it’s went fine using the prep machine ☺️ hopefully this helps her x

Hiya I was in exactly the same position with gaviscon but it wasn’t cutting it so we got aptamil anti reflux. The good thing with it that we are doing at the moment is that you can adjust the thickness for your baby- we use 2 scoops normal aptamil and 2 scoops anti reflux in the same bottle to thicken it slightly but not too much We have had firmer poos with it though, so I also give him a dose of lactulose (2.5ml) once a day. I rang my gp about all of these things and they just said ‘monitor it’ so I took things into my own hands because I feel I know what’s right for my baby and they clearly didn’t want to help!

Also we put the normal aptamil into the hot shot of the prep machine, shake and then when the cooler water is added we then add the anti reflux and shake. We also swirl and tap the bottle like they do for your cappuccino 😂 because it gets rid of the bubbles. With pure anti reflux you will need size 2 teat, but with the mix that we use we just use the size 1 cuz he gulps it down otherwise as it’s not too thick. Hope this helps!

@Katherine aw I didn’t think of mixing the formulas! I’ll see how she does with this bottle and maybe do half and half next time. Thank you. Yeh exactly, they are useless the doctors, they said to me that it was normal as she is a newborn! How can her screaming and being irritated during her feeds be normal. It’s hell watching her!

This is just like my LG it breaks my heart! I actually dread feeding as its no fun for anyone. Shes on Gaviscon and Omeprazole and the Gav does work for sickness with her normal milk (Mamia). Weve tried all things to help, she doesnt have issues pooping itself but she has an awful lot of wind and is agony passing it, especially during her feed. Weve been on Aptamil anti reflux and cow and gate AR but both made her very gassy and hard stools due to the bubbles (my first had this issue on thr normal ones too). Weve tried infacol, gripe water, colief and most recently dentinox and nothing helps during her feeding... Im fed up with the Gaviscon tummy issues and the omeprazole i dont think is working much either plus she HATES taking it and literally inhaled and choked on it this morning due to her screaming about it, it was terrifying 😢. Im tempted to sack off the meds and give Hipp organic AR a try as a last resort. Because in my area they dont prescribe Carobel and id have to buy in bulk on Amazon £30🤦‍♀️

@Beth what milk do you use and has the Carobel caused any wind/pooping issues? Im reluctant to try Hipp AR as the Aptamil and cow&gate ARs made her really bad. But this Gaviscon has gotta go coz shes in so much distress :-/. I can only get Carobel in bulk on amazon as they dont prescribe it in my area... Im unsure what to try next 🤦‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

@Caz aw that sounds so awful! I really feel for you. Seeing them cry and in so much pain is awful, I feel useless when my little girl is feeding. Iv heard mixed things about the reflux formulas so I can only try, so far so good she’s had two bottles and is so much awake and happy and no cries during her feed. That scream is terrifying - I feel you, my heart drops everytime my little girl screams like that, she gets really sweaty aswel, poor babies xxx

@Caz I’ve just been using his normal cow and gate milk, he is quite windy anyway so I use Dentinox or Infacol, yes we had to buy the carobel in bulk on Amazon and just had to hope it worked which thankfully it does! No pooping issues!

@Beth oh that sounds great. How long have you been using it? How much do you put in per feed and how often do you use it? Id like to try Carobel with the Mamia as i highly rate the milk (used it with my first for 1 year with no issues) but she wouldnt be able to skip a dose of it else the milk is far too thin. Its not really helpful on Amazon info as far as dosing goes 🤦‍♀️. I was thinking of coming off all meds and just trying a swap to Hipp Anti reflux instead as ive heard great things but not sure what to do for the best 🥲 I have Dentinox and even Lactulose on back up 🤦‍♀️

@Tonicha yeh its no fun for anyone 😢. the Aptamil AR worked great as far as sickness but as it built up in her system it caused so much wind trouble and so did the Cow and gate AR as they are so so foamy nomatter how you mix it 😤. But neither the gaviscon or omeprazole have improved her other symptoms so i dont see much point putting her througj the stress on it anymore. She needs some form of AR milk or thickener to be able to keep her feeds down though. I hate all of this, it sucks so much! Especially as i also have a 23 month old with me all day old to care for and this extra strain with my newborn is quite tiring and i feel bad for my Toddler 🥲

@Beth ah thank you so much for that! So the bulk buy comes as a 6, how long is it all lasting you? Im trying to decide to get this or try the Hipp AR milk first 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Caz we’re on the second box now so probably a box a week!

@Beth oh thats not too bad then i guess. I went and bought the Hipp AR to try in the end but i will defo get the Carobel to use with the Mamia if i really need to. Just want her off the bloody Gaviscon! 🥲

@Caz I know it’s such a minefield isn’t it trying to work out what’s best!

@Beth yeh its bloody awful! 😖
