I am having my first baby and everyone is so excited, especially my in laws because it will be their first grand baby. That said, my mother is law is extremely overbearing, negative, and literally sucks all the energy out of a room. I would consider our current relationship “fine” and in a good place, but I am worried because she is already trying to plan a trip so she can be there right when the baby is born. I personally do not want them there right away and would prefer they come a week later to give me and husband the opportunity to get settled. How do we approach this? Anyone else have their in laws come later on? They live in a different state which makes this a little easier, but still.

Your feelings are valid. I feel the same way with my MIL. That being said, your husband needs to address it with her… he needs to let her know the boundaries that y’all have set as a couple. That’s how my hubby and I do it. When it comes to boundaries I set them with my parents and he sets them with his.

Maybe get ahead of this before she books travel and everything else. I would speak up now and start enforcing boundaries if she is extremely negative and overbearing. Who would want that energy after labor?!?! And lean on your husband and place some responsibility on him being it’s his family ❤️

We are actually not saying a word until the baby arrives. I was too stressed out my first pregnancy and plan to announce a week after baby is here.
You have to do what is best for your mental health. The first week after having a baby is a bit brutal.. I remember the pain using the bathroom and barely able to keep food down so I was only able to drink pedialyte.. That is why we want privacy just in case that happens again🙏🏻
Worst case... tell her the due date changed if she is the type to not listen🤣
At the end of the day, she needs to respect the both of you and your husband needs to stand his ground with her.
