Single mums

Hi,

For those who are single mums how are you finding it and how often are babies seeing their dads? I'm so torn between knowing my son needs his dad but hating the idea of not having him with me (as in my son not ex). My lo is still breastfed morning and evening so dont know how an overnight stay would go and honestly don't feel ready for it but know I'm being selfish. We've only made the decision to split today and have lots of logistics to work out so looking for guidance of how others are working it. Thank you!

My ex broke up with me when I first became pregnant and from then on we’ve been coparenting. He wants overnights but I’m not comfortable with that yet as he does live 4 hrs away from us. It’s really hard to know if I’m doing the right thing by my son, as yes a bond with his dad is so important but also he’s very dependant on me and we co sleep. Dad said he wouldn’t co sleep so 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s so hard

I don't think overnight stays away from a baby's main caregiver are recommended or necessary at this age. Also from a professional point of view from working with adoptive parents - we never do an overnight stay during the transition period for under three year olds. It's too disruptive and has no obvious benefit. As you are breastfeeding it's even more disruptive at a time when your lo needs familiarity and comfort. And for you too, you shouldn't have to risk mastitis when your baby will just be sleeping most of the time anyway. You're not being selfish, it sounds like you're thinking of your little boy and wanting to keep things as normal as possible for him. I hope things go okay for you x
