When are you having your first ultrasound?

Hello lovely ladies! I’m a first time mum, this is my second pregnancy, the first was a miscarriage at 6 weeks, I’m now at 7 weeks and I was wondering when you all are having your first scan? Mine is in a few days and I can’t wait, the days seem to drag so much ! Trying to stay as positive as I can 🥰

20 weeks! That is so far away! Is there a reason you’re waiting that long? 💕

the idea is that the benefits should outweigh the risks because modern ultrasounds although common, haven't exactly been proven safe. like we can't say they're unsafe but we also can't say they're safe which is pretty backward considering how many doctors send women off for scans really often throughout. similar to cannabis use, there aren't enough studies to prove safety but there also aren't enough to say it's unsafe & the benefit doesn't outweigh the risk for me so I won't touch it pregnant. ultrasounds can be used to produce changes to biological tissue (like cancer therapy for example). human epidemiological studies of the safety of ultrasounds were carried out decades ago when the output levels weren't as high. personally I do wonder (obviously just speculation) if some miscarriages after the first early scan are caused by ultrasounds and it's just not a risk id be willing to take unless the benefits were great enough. not only that but we arent meant to use saunas and spas pregnant for risk of

overheating yet ultrasounds have a thermal effect on the fetus so I'm like 🤔🤔 there have been very few positive findings following ultrasound exposure of mammalian fetuses to ultrasound too which is concerning to me being that we are also mammals. so yeah all in all, it would have to be REALLY beneficial for me to do it and at this point, any results from the earlier scans wouldn't change the way I'd be treating my pregnancy so what's the point? the detailed anomaly 20 week scan is an exception to me particularly to check for growth and defects like spina bifida, heart conditions, genetic disorders & placenta position so we can make any necessary plans for after the birth of we need to. like I plan to home birth but if we found the baby had spina bifida for example we would change our plans to birth in the hospital for immediate attention. I also see soooo many women get results from the scans and stress over things they can't change anyway so there's no harm done in just trusting the body and checking

those really necessary things at the 20 wk scan
Sorry for the novel hahahaha it's a complicated topic and wanted to provide full context because there are so many considerations with these things! each to their own of course too, I don't say any of this because I think everyone should do what I'm doing but this is the choice I've made and I support everyone's right to choose what they do with their pregnancy of course 🫶🏼

Hi Kayla, im also Kayla! 👋 I'm planning mine at 8-10weeks. This is when alot of the online articles, GPs and previous casestudies (friends) are saying. Definately another angle I haven't considered with the ultrasound that Naomi is mentioning though. At the end of the day it's up to you on which risk you would consider or not so hopefully this gives you some information to consider.

Perhaps you can talk to others/experts or GPs to find out which option works for you!

Hi! I’m 8 weeks and planned my first scan between the 7-8 week mark. Turns out I was 6 weeks and 5 days.

I felt better about doing a scan earlier as I have a friend that lost a tube due to an undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy and another that had a missed miscarriage where baby had stopped growing around the 5 week mark.

So it gave me peace of mind to know that the pregnancy was occurring in the right place and baby had a heartbeat.

Definitely comes down to personal preference though 😊

I had a dating scan at 6 weeks and 1 day and found out I’m having twins. Both had a heart beat at that scan. I had another scan at 8 weeks and 1 day on recommendation of the sonographer. It was great to have some reassurance seeing them both with strong heartbeats. I will have another scan at 10 weeks 1 day before my NIP blood collection. Then the 12 week anomaly scan.

Hi, I’m 4 months postpartum, little one sleeps through the night and is formula fed, the last week I’ve felt extremely tired and very hungry! Just wondered if anyone else has felt this way/experienced this?

Early waters/pre term labour?

I can’t get checked until later today unfortunately. I can’t tell if I’m leaking/starting early. I definitely think I’m having braxton hicks yesterday and today.. i have some pain in my back but she is quite low down so hoping it’s just pressure, baby was a little quieter yesterday but she’s back to more normal movements today, but my underwear just seems to get so wet, especially after going to the bathroom. And I honestly can’t work out the smell, I’m pretty sure it’s just discharge/urine leaking but there’s that worry in my mind a little. Are there any other ways to know/check if it could be the start of it all?
