Iron tablets

I am 36 weeks and at my last appointment the midwife told me that they would check my iron levels again since they always remained low. Honestly, I was taking them irregularly since they always made me feel bad. They also told me that they could give me a dose of iron during labor. What would be the goal of it?

Usually if your iron levels are low they would offer a dose of iron during birth so that your body can cope with the blood loss x

Hi Claudia, I’m in the same situation also 36 weeks. I had to go and get bloods taken today to check my iron levels incase I need an iron infusion before Bub is born and from my understanding it’s mainly to help with blood loss, having a positive impact on your health and fetal development.

I'm the same, 38 weeks now and got a final check on thurs before deciding if I need an infusion. I can't take them every day either they make me feel so bad too, horrible stuff! X

and thanks ☺️and definitely makes me feel better that I'm not the only one who doesn't tolerate them. I have my appointment scheduled at my 38 weeks too and before that I will go for blood tests to see if I will need the infusion. Not long now for us 🥲

Can I ask what are the side effects for you?
I’m currently trying to work out if I feel better when I’m not taking iron too x

They make me nauseous and really constipated. Wouldn't mind so much if I felt I had more energy but I don't, I still feel tired and sluggish on them! x

Try to take them at night after you’ve eaten it was a big improvement with my first but luckily I don’t need them this time
