Feeling penalised for not losing my baby

My best friend and I were SUPER close, more like sisters really and we have been through everything together over our 13 years of friendship. However, it seems that me finally having a healthy pregnancy has been the thing to end our friendship.

I am now 6 months pregnant with my double rainbow baby and for the first 3 months was classed high risk, and was under EPU. I also suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum that led to hospitalisation (I still have it but am on 2 lots of meds). I was hospitalised recently due to a potential heart condition spending a week in hospital (a pulmonary embolism was mentioned) and have been diagnosed with a chronic condition that has either been triggered or exacerbated by the pregnancy, and am now under consultant care (I am in the UK). Also had a scare recently due to baby measuring small.

My best friend has been burying her head in the sand for some time with her husband continuously delaying TTC (they are 37) and a couple of years ago he made her choose between him and their unplanned pregnancy and she ended up getting an abortion. I put my own feelings and struggles TTC aside and supported her. She also hid the abortion from everyone apart from me and her mum as she didn’t want people to hate her husband (then boyfriend of 6 years) and it seemed like she never addressed it with him. He is still delaying TTC and now they are married.

Since falling pregnant with my double rainbow she has been the least supportive-inc dismissing my feelings, down playing my experiences and even appearing irritated. When suffering with HG and my doctor rushing me to the hospital due to severe dehydration she told me “it is no easy feat growing a human, you need to grin and bare it”. When I was struggling with all of the other health issues she accused me of wanting people to “rally around me”. When I had my second loss, I supported my other two pregnant friends because it was not their fault!

I have tried my upmost to limit pregnancy talk but is so hard being hospitalised and going through it without someone I was so close to. My messages go unread for weeks or she responds like the above and I feel like I have been carrying the friendship since I was 8 weeks pregnant. I have asked her COUNTLESS times if she is okay and she says she is.

It feels like it is easier for her to be rubbish to me than to actually TALK to her husband. I feel so let down 😔 I was in hospital again today and I thought there is no point telling her as she won’t care.

I think I need to admit that the friendship is over. Would you say how you feel before drawing a line under it?

She’s really hurt me and I feel penalised for not having another loss.

I would absolutely tell her how she's made you feel and tell her that despite it once being an amazing friendship you're not in the position to continue it due to the lack of support and making you feel the way she does. She should be supporting you through this fully. Two of my closest friends are struggling for kids (I was told I was infertile but here I am pregnant with my second) and both times I've announced my pregnancy to them they've been amazing and supportive and really cheered me on, you don't need people like her in your life making you feel like you should've had another loss ❤️

Definitely leave that friendship. She is in a toxic relationship with her husband and she is taking it out on you. You need to have peace in your life, especially with a baby on the way.

I wouldn’t even tell her how I felt. I’d cut all ties and be on my way.
Friendships breakdown, it’s gutting. Harder than relationship breaking down some would say.
When this baby comes you won’t even have the time to care and nor will you want to.
Fuck her. Block delete move on.

She is just projecting her jealousy on to you though fyi. And jealousy is an ugly trait

I would say something if she meant a lot to you and been friends for a long time
It’s good for you to have closure especially during this time
And if she starts mouthing off just give her a simple precise explanation, and then block her and be on with your life

Personally no friendships ever worked out for me and I lost all friendships once I had my daughter
The thing is everyone knew my dream was to have a little family so it just shows they were never going to stay to begin with

Sometimes in life all that matters is those that see you, your children and husband if they are supportive of you

Not everyone is going to treat u the way u have treated them and when you have those expectations that’s usually when you are left disappointed. I think give her space and just focus on yourself and your baby and focus on those that are actively supporting you. I think you friend isn’t being mean she is just hurting and is also in pain clearly. There seems to be some resentment that she is holding onto either for her husband, herself or both. Sadly you are getting the worst of it. So just distance yourself, I don’t think u need to give any speech or long explanation why- she herself will know exactly why. Just focus on you and go where the love is. Pray for your friend to heal.

please at least try to talk to her cuz she may not realize she’s being a bad friend. i had one friend cut me off when she was maybe 3-4 months pp (i had no kids at the time) and to this day idk what i did or said to make her cut me off and talk trash about me behind my back. really wish she would’ve said something because i’m an extremely understanding person and would have liked to at least have the chance to apologize before we ended the friendship.

I am trying to talk to her, but I suggested us meeting up over a week ago to have a chat and she has read my message and not responded…this is why I wanted to say my piece as I really care about her and honestly I have lost count how many times I have cried over the situation. She’s like a different person-I have been shocked by the things she has said to me without any regard on how it will affect me. I was sat there in hospital getting my baby monitored due to a suspected pulmonary embolism and my best friend was absent 😔

Write her a message saying how you feel but just don’t expect anything from it, I had a similar issue with a friend of 30 years and I told her how I felt and I got an awful response so I just didn’t reply and she never reached out to me again and that was 5 years ago so her loss.
You know what they say, you find out who your friends are when you have a baby but you have just found out sooner x

Sounds like you are both suffering in different ways. You should tell her how you feel if she doesn’t want to listen or converse with you it means she’s still hurting, not ready to talk, and be distancing herself for her own mental health too. Friendship is a two way street. So you both have to work for it. If not then it will fall apart. If she doesn’t want to give you the time of day or closure and if she doesn’t want to work for it, you have your answer too. If it gets to that point you have to guard yourself, protect yourself and own energy as it’s causing you stress which isn’t good for you or the baby.

try what hayley said, write her a message and you’ll see if the friendship will continue or not. at least you’re finding out now and not while you’re postpartum. dealing with a newborn and expecting support from a friend but not getting any is a different type of low

I’m so sorry you are going through this. I just want to say your friend and her partner have a lot to learn & will likely have a nasty shock when they do eventually start TTC. He sounds like as control freak. I would give your friend one last chance, maybe write an email or letter voicing how you feel and go from there xx

Avatar

thank you. It’s incredibly hard as I feel like I am getting the brunt of their issues. Not to sound like a stalker but I can see that she is regularly on WhatsApp and has read my message ages ago about us having a chat and still isn’t responding. I feel like she literally couldn’t care less. I was in hospital again this week and thought there is no point telling her as I either won’t get a response or she will dismiss my experience. It feels like my empathic and understanding best friend of over a decade has gone and she doesn’t care how she is treating me

As hard as it may feel maybe it’s time to move on. You’ve expressed your feelings and in a round about (cruel) way she’s giving you an answer. Friendship is a 2 way partnership which she’s failing so my advice is look to make new connections as I feel this may only bring you down over time. This should be a wonderful time and experience of your life with those who love and care about you xx
