Hi all, my partner is English and I’m bilingual.
My mother tongue is a minority language so either I teach baby that one or it will never happen.
My 2nd tongue is a widely spoken, world valuable language the kid should definitely learn.
And my partner is British and we live in the UK :)
Has anyone been in a similar situation? How have you managed the teaching/speaking dynamics?

II am in a similar situation i know people who have grown up kids here and seems one language always drop so they manage to be bilinguals but not trilingual..
my LG is five months now and I am speaking in both languages ( one is more of a dialect) and planning a lot of trip back home so she picks up the languages.
I am hoping I will manage to teach her both languages.. I think it just a matter that she understands when she speaks to me it will be either ( French or Arabic ) no English with me

Thank you very much for sharing! ☺️

Same here. I speak Russian and Latvian. So when the little bundle is born I will speak mostly in Russian and my partner will speak to him in English. I will ensure he sees and speaks to my family back home a lot to ensure that he picks up both English and Russian. I might see to maybe then add Latvian later on (as I myself learned Latvian in kindergarten around 3 years old). Children are curios and each child would be different, but from all the information I read it has advised to have one parent talk one language and other parent another, or if both parents talk same language talk it at home only and have them exposed to another language socially.

Im Brazilian and my partner is English. I’m planning on using my mother tongue with my baby when time comes and my partner will use English. It’s easier for babies to learn than when they are older

I am english and my husband is kurdish/turkish so we will be teachong our daughter all 3 languages and hopefully she will pick them all up xx

I’m a bilingual Spanish speaker (but born and raised in UK) so will be teaching my kid Spanish

I am French and my husband is English, we're thinking that I will speak only in French to our kid and he will speak English...the problem being that I have to speak English with him though,so I'm already a bit stressed that the pressure is on me. Three languages seem even harder, especially if it's all on you,how do you feel about it ? Maybe as someone suggested, it would be good to stick to one each to start with and introduce the third one a bit later ...

I didn't raise one but I worked at a daycare with two trilingual kids (siblings). The mom spoke Mongolian, the dad spoke Arabic and they both spoke English. So at school they would speak English to us, if dad picked up you would hear them talking in Arabic and if mom picked up you could hear them talk to her in Mongolian. One day the little girl came to school with her favorite book but I couldn't read it because it was in Mongolian. We asked her mom to come to the school and read it to the class. It was pretty cool how smoothly she translated it. It was just cool to see a family dynamic like that.

A family member of mine taught his children both English and Afrikaans by him and his wife speaking to them in their respective first languages. They’re both South African and speak both languages themselves so the whole family had full understanding of what was being said regardless of which language was being spoken. I remember as a 16 year old being baffled by this 3 year old switching languages depending on who he was talking to!

Thank you so much ladies!! 🙌
My current thoughts from all your comments:
- Family unit language: whichever Dad also speaks (English)
- 1:1 language, I’ll stick to my minority mother tongue
- 3rd language: Will come down to how we feel about it when the time comes but either a) do daily TV sessions as main exposure to it (all baby shows etc.) or b) wait until they are a bit older and look for external language exposure such as Sunday groups
Hope it goes very well for you 🤞!
