Depending when the house comes over, you can say that he’s living with you three times a week most the time they don’t check my partner has her boyfriend living with her and she still claims as a single Mum and I do the same and my partner lives with me

Because he’s not on the tenancy then it shouldn’t really matter you are allowed to swim with you or stay with you three times a week because he’s not on the tenancy he won’t come and check if he’s staying there over that or not

I work for a HA. For some properties you need permission for someone to stay with you or move in permanently. You will also need to inform UC if your boyfriend is able to earn and can contribute towards rent and other expenditure. They will reassess your claim. That's the right way forward.
If you want to avoid UC being informed and for them to continue paying your rent then you can keep quiet about it. However if someone informs your landlord (HA) about someone living with you then they can do an investigation.

If you were to put him down as living there, the cost would then be down to both of you meaning if you or him are working full time, you will most likely lose ur housing payments. So I would recommend saying he just stays from time to time and I highly doubt they will be coming out to check xx

You won’t loose your housing element but your uc will be affected by his wages if he works so you do his wage eg 1500 a month -£379 (work allowance) =1121 x 0.55 = 616.55

So say your total uc before deductions is £1100

You would minus the 616.55 off then 1100 and that’s how much uc you would be left with. No element of uc is protected from deductions.

Hope this helps there’s also a good Facebook page called universal credit survival

This is only correct if you don’t earn any wage too btw!

In these situations it's never good to lie. Because you could lose it all. If he's living with you then he can contribute. That's how life is. If he doesn't earn enough to wipe out your UC then you'll still get some.

I know this isn’t my post but thought I’d ask for some advice anyway too. I’m due to give birth in less then 10 weeks and I’ve been given a temp flat far out the borough, if i have my partner stay with me for a few days do you think that would be a problem? I don’t want to get into trouble

Avatar

@Kashani if he's there to support you with the the baby it's different. Because he has a reason to be there as long as he isn't there more than 3 days for a long period it's fine

Avatar

nope, just keep his stuff in a travel bag so if anyone did come over you can show he's not there permanently etc. for a new baby he's fine to stay for a few days

You've got two options, be truthful and have him contributing towards bills which he should if living with you or lie and wait to get caught out potentially and then have to give up the flat and he sanctioned by UC. Someone I know very well chose the latter option she was ordered to repay thousands to uc and lost her ha flat and was refused help from the council permanently for any housing and had to scrape together money to privately rent which wasn't easy.

Avatar

that’s my biggest fear 😫. Most people I know have their partner move in with them secretly

Avatar

@Kashani well don't do, because it's not worth losing everything over.

Avatar

It does matter if you move him in he would have to be added legally as living with you on the tenancy and then he would be equally responsible for paying rent. I personally am much better off since my partner moved in, we still get help from UC but his wage on top means we arent scraping by each month. If you have someone earning living with you, you have to legally add it to your UC claim or you're committing fraud and may end up owing them loads.
You dont lose your housing or child element, but each month the amount given changes depending on his earnings

Avatar

@Kashani i think the rules are if partner is with you 3x nights a week, thats when its affected. But im not 100% sure if thats still the case.

Thanks guys, it wont be all the time but just days if I’m struggling it would be nice to know I can have some help

I’m in a housing association and get mostly all my rent paid for me if he moves in could this be affected my partner is only on uc as well but what if he decides to work?

Avatar

he’s not on my tenancy I’m just scared I’ll get in trouble if universal credit find out as mostly all my rent gets paid by universal credit so will that be stopped if he lives with me my partner is also on universal credit but what if he finds a job ?

Avatar

if I add him to my uc claim will I get less money as I’ve heard people struggle more when it’s a joint claim? My bf also doesn’t work and is only on uc

Avatar

will I still get mostly all my rent paid like I do now if he lives with me he’s also on uc but if he got a job would it affect that?

Avatar

I am just scared to get caught out

I live in a housing association and I have been told if I want my partner to live with me I need to permission and I need to tell universal credit I am unsure what to do because what would happen if I didn’t tell anyone would I get in trouble if it got founded out? Or should I tell them would I get less universal credit and my rent not paid for?

Avatar

If he only gettibg uc with no wages your claim will change to joint so instead of £368 each you would get £578 If he decides to work yes as you will have a joint claim it would be the first £379 a month he can earn without it affecting anything

Avatar

I am living in a housing association and are u sure? I have been told that people are worse off with a joint universal credit account

Avatar

My friend she’s on universal credit she still gets paid and she has her partner with her but he’s not on the tenancy. As long. As you can say that is only three nights a week then it’s okay

Avatar

Is the 3 nights a week thing an actual rule or ?

Avatar

but if I want my partner living with me and I get founded out he’s staying more then 3 nights a week i would be in trouble surely?

Avatar

yes in most places

Avatar

Apparently that isn't actually true I asked them it's if they financially contribute towards the bills etc
