Hello all, I just wanted to share what happened this week, I had asked for early testing of gestational diabetes due to having quite a few risk factors and feeling very symptomatic. Normally they do not offer unless u have had it previously. However I stood my ground despite them trying to cancel the appointment 10 hours prior and yesterday I was diagnosed with GD. If your gut is telling you something trust it, it can save you and your baby ❤️ or at least it can help put ur mind at ease. For reference I am 16w2 and normally you are tested at 24w-28w.

I contacted my midwife this week because I have a feeling I may have it but they've denied me being tested early because I didn't meet the criteria for early testing. Its quite frustrsting! I'm currently 18+5 and feels like forever to be tested!

They will.test you if you have evidence of glucose in your urine which is nearly always the case with gestational diabetes

Can I ask what symptoms you had? I also feel like I have GD and am 20 weeks today. My appointment isn’t until the 10th of may and they told me they prefer to test later

i would ask again if ur having symptoms, but if they dont main advice i have been given so far is watch my diet, but i have consultant next week to find out more x

yeah mine were fine, but my bloods from the tests were very high so not sure why urine didnt show anything.

extreme fatigue, hot and cold flashes, very thirsty, and blurry vision. Their preference isn’t matter of fact thats why i pushed for one cause i am not a number in a system and im not risking my rainbow baby for sake of conforming x

urine isnt a reliable source of GD. Even of youre not diabetic if youve just had a sugary drink glucose will show up in your urine & if you are diabetic but not had anything high sugar it can show up normal x

If you have persistent hyperglycaemia which will be the case in established and uncontrolled diabetes you will get glucose in your urine.
The issue with testing individuals without risk factors and not evidence of glycosuria is you can test too early and therefore get a negative glucose tolerance test. Individuals however presenting with significant signs and symptoms of diabetes should be tested. More often than not, people are asymptomatic however.
Guidelines between trusts vary, so where someone will get tested on request others will not.
It takes a relatively long time for GD to develop, so waiting a few weeks for a test has no major implications on the baby or maternal outcomes.

i am 16w2 and was confirmed GD so think being tested early is still useful as i was being affected. I was also told its prudent that I follow advice to ensure a healthy pregnancy so I think the sooner the better chance of delivering a baby. I know trusts vary but every woman should be able to advocate for testing regardless.

I don't and have not disagreed with you being tested at 16w. You have detailed that you have risk factors so that absolutely fits criteria for testing.
I just wanted to clarify for everyone how the system works. I do not have a personal stance on it.
I thought it prudent to let everyone know that it's very unlikely any women would be left undiagnosed for long periods of time. Because I think people can become very anxious after reading posts like this.

i understand 😊 I only posted as I had been told I was overthinking and my gut feeling proved correct. Don’t get me wrong I am terrified atm but I would rather know now and increase my chances of my baby being safe.
