Croup
FTM here. Does anyone have any experience with croup? When or what do I need to look for to go to the ER? I'm trying to stay out of the ER if I can help it. But I am very anxious. What have you done at home to help? Does it go away on its own or will he need medical attention? My son is eight months old. He is still eating and wetting diapers. We've been steaming him out in the bathroom, boogie sucker, nasal spray, cooling mist, and Tylenol for fever. Some times he's good and happy and playing and then he's not. He's coughing and sneezing and his voice is so hoarse. I just want to make sure he's okay but stay out of the ER if I can.

Our son got croup at about 7 months and we took him to the pediatric urgent care and then the pediatrician afterwards cause I’d already made the appointment before going to urgent care. They basically said at that age they couldn’t do much of anything about it. The urgent care gave him a round of steroids that helped for about 3 days and then it wore off and he was back to being sick but not as bad. The pediatrician said the same thing of not having anything to do about it and to treat it as a cold. So we basically did everything you’re doing right now and he eventually got better but it was definitely rough. He wouldn’t sleep well and we’d have to sit in his room basically all night holding him upright so he could sleep.
What I definitely add into the routine is using that Fridamom breath easy kit that has the baby vapo rub in it. That vapo rub was awesome and helped his sinuses stay open a bit longer at night
So croup is a distinctive bark cough- you can Google the croup cough- not a nice sound. My nephews used to get when younger and he had asthma too so took croup bad- when we heard cough we always took to Dr or hospital to get steroids (they may also give nebuliser) and he had blue inhaler(salbutamol). My nephew was wheezing and difficulty breathing (horrible to watch). You need to be careful with croup that breathing not being impaired..once my nephew lips turned blue cause oxygen was low x in my experience- croup needs steroids to clear but I'm not a dr- if in doubt- seek medical help x hope you and wee one ok xx
Thank you so much! That makes me feel a little better. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't hurting him by not taking him to the hospital. I was up with him all night long and I know it'll be the same tonight. My heart just breaks seeing him like this. I wanna take it away. I wish there was more I could do to help him. I'll definitely use the breath easy vapo rub. We've been using the drops in his humidifier and in the steam shower but I haven't used the vapo rub yet. I was worried he'd touch it and then put his hands in his mouth. I've had him down to his diaper most of the time because of the fever.
