i had my 28 week midwife appointment yesterday, and was told after she measured my belly that baby is measuring on the 97% centile (is measuring bigger than average at this stage). however, in the same breath, she literally said the belly measurements arenāt always accurate due to the placenta being there too. she also said if baby is still measuring bigger next month, then sheās going to start sending me for growth scans š«£
i didnāt have this with my previous pregnancy, and my son came out 8 pound 2 (i was actually told he was going to be small š
).
has anyone else been told this, and for it not be the case?
i have got a 4D scan next week so iām going to get babies measurements there to get another opinion āŗļø

I had my 28 last week and told me baby girl was measuring really small but went for a growth scan the next day and she was absolutely perfect!

i was told this literally days ago that she was in the 95th and turns out it was really wrong, had a growth scan the day after and sheās measuring in the 37 centile, donāt worry about it š„°

The measuring of bump is not reliable information of size of baby so don't worry. Even growth scans are only estimated. I had mine done the other day and was told I'm on the 10th percentile, I have a growth scan on 29th (just cause of other health issues) so we'll see how they level out x

Thank u ladies for this. Itās very informative

I wouldnāt take the measurements too seriously, Iāve been referred for growth scans in both previous pregnancies after the fundal measurement said baby was measuring small, first was 8lb15 and second was 7lb14 š Iāve opted for no bump measurements this pregnancy because itās unreliable and mostly used as a way to push unnecessary intervention. If two different midwives take the measurement for example, youāre likely to get two different results

Same for me yesterday and she was going to send me for a scan but when ringing to get me booked in said the "guidelines have changed" and now it's 2 separate measurements then a scan. But as all these comments suggest everyone goes after first measurement, which slightly worries meš© sorry I know this doesn't answer your question lol xx

Iām I the exact same boat as you! I also have my 4D scan next Friday thank goodness! X

I had my 26wk appointment yesterday and was also measuring in the 97%
Iām having growth scans anyway cause Iām high risk. Have my scan next week so will be interesting to see if thatās the same.
Also booked me in for a diabetes test.
Itās good if they do growth scans at least you get to see the baby every 4 weeks.
Good luck and try not to worry x

Iāve been told the same that this baby is measuring very big! Iāll need to get anther glucose test done and I might need to go up every 3 weeks for growth scans.. i have a 4D scan tomorrow so I will let you know what they say about the babies weight then I have the growth scan next Friday! Try not to stress yourself out too much.
I hope everything will be fine with you

thank you!! iād really appreciate that š„° i have my 4D scan on the 28th, so iām hoping they can tell me a more accurate weight x

thank you so much for your responses ladies!! youāve all put my mind at ease š„°
iām glad it isnāt just me whoās experienced this recently, i never had it with my son so itās a new experience for me š
iām not due to see the midwife until 16th of April now, which is when she said sheāll measure again & see if i need to go for any growth scans. fingers crossed i donāt but weāll see āŗļø
itās how the midwife said āyour baby is measuring bigger than average, but then again, these measurements arenāt accurateā i felt like saying āiād rather you have not said anythingā š but i know theyāve got to tell us so weāre aware just incase her measurements are correct.
thank you again all! iām hoping the 4D scan will tell me more x

hi I got my scan today and Iām measuring 2 weeks to big so im going to see when I go to my other scan next week the hospital one. The 4D was an amazing experience and Iāll let you know how my hospital one goes next week! Hope your keeping well xx

I'm measuring shy of 2cm small. Because of other health issues I'm having a growth scan tomorrow just to check on how she's going.

just to update you all:
i went for my 4D scan today, the lady kindly measured baby and sheās measuring bang on average (35th centile), apart from her belly being on the smaller side š
this just goes to show to never take the midwife bump measurements too accurately āŗļø

My update
My scan measurements were off the chart above the 97th centile, I tested positive for gd, now have to have scans every two weeks and test my blood sugars 4x a day.
They also said my cervix had shortened and there was funneling which could indicate pre term labour. Has anyone else had this ?

can someone explain the percentile thing? I keep seeing this, havenāt got my measurements yet but Iām a few days from 28 weeks so Iāll be doing it soon and Iām so confused by the percentiles lol

In your notes you should have a growth chart which are based on your height , weight , age) itās nothing to be too concerned about but might mean that baby is a little bit bigger or smaller than the average. they will keep an eye on babies growth with scans. Ideally baby should be measuring on the middle line which is 50th centile anything on the two lines below 10th or 3rd means baby is a little smaller anything on the two lines above 90th and 97th means baby is bigger.
So for me if there were 100 babies in a room and Iām measuring on the 97th there will only be 3 babies bigger than mine out of the 100.
If baby is off the scale big or small thatās when they keep a close eye and intervention if needed. Hope this helps
