Hi all, I had my baby four weeks ago and suffered a 2nd degree tear, for the past week it’s been incredibly itchy, sore and on off smelling. Bleeding has stopped, I still wear a pad as the midwife said to carry on because I’m breastfeeding. But the itchiness has gotten worse and I’m just wondering whether I should be reaching out to my GP to have the stitches and wound checked? My partner did have a look in the week and said he could see a little bit of yellow but no massively offensive smell or oozing. Is this normal for wound healing? I’ve never had any stitches for anything before so this is totally new to me and I had no form of aftercare following the birth! Thanks ☺️

I would say that needs to be checked, I had stitches with my first and second and never had anything like that. I’m sure my midwife said any off smells or strange discharge/oozing to get checked. No harm done if all ok xx

Could be the stitches coming out, try salt bath to aid healing :)

Is the itching coming from the stitches or the pads? I had to stop wearing the pads early cause I found the material got very uncomfortable after a couple of weeks. The smell does sound concerning, i’d suggest calling GP. If you are less than 28 days you can call your hospital assessment unit.
Thank you so much! I don’t think it’s the pads because it feels itchy inside, I think I’ll contact the unit over the weekend to ask for them to check as the itching feels like it’s in areas where I know I don’t have any stitches. Thank you

I had a third degree tear and didn’t have anything like that. Have you had a look in the mirror to see if it looks infected? I’d definitely get it checked anyway x
