I had a discussion with my BIL about child support and how according to him it is unfair to the man. His argument is that he would be willing to open a Walmart account for his bm to buy whatever she needs for their daughter whenever she wants instead of paying child support but he feels like with just giving her money he’s paying for her lifestyle instead of just for their child.
I’m curious what everyone’s opinion is. Should all dads be on child support or would you find an arrangement as mentioned fair?

I’m genuinely curious what everyone thinks child support should cover? Only necessities for the child or should there be some type of pay for the mom because she takes care of the child most of the time?

Whether the money is going to the child or the mom’s lifestyle doesn’t matter because it is the same thing. It’s like eating fruit separate or making a smoothie. If he doesn’t pay child support then she’s left to pay for everything herself and if he does, and the mom uses it for her lifestyle, then she’ll have enough money for baby to have their necessities. And how I see it, it doesn’t matter because the mom’s lifestyle is the child’s life too. It’s a bitter baby father mindset to not want to pay because “it’s going to be used for her”

I think it is based on how the parent is. Some parents I do see use the child support for keeping up with their lifestyle, in which those cases I think something like the Walmart account is more feasible for meeting the child's needs. Then on the other hand, there are those that actually use the money for bills, housing, clothing and such, then I think it's perfectly reasonable to pay child support.

It depends on many factors but it’s often very unfair. I’ve seen so many cases of court ordering men to pay amounts that basically leaves them unable to pay their own bills sometimes and many times the mother doesn’t even use the child support on the child. The system was built to favor the moms no matter what. Which I’m not against necessarily as a mother but there’s definitely a lot of unfairness going on

Paying 17% (based off of 1 child in NY) of your income to help support your child isn't robbery...
If someone is complaining about the amount, they obviously have no clue what children require.
Also, if someone is unable to pay their bills because of Child support, they need to manage their funds a little better or get another job before making more children.
If the couple were still together, they'd be paying 50/50, right? But now that they've made a child and are separate, Child support is a problem..?
Also, Child support is 'usually' sought after because there is a parent who is lacking in the contribution department from the jump.. So of course they would think that any percentage is unfair. If they just contributed to begin with, then they likely wouldn't have been mandated to pay.
Raising a child isn't cheap, and it isn't bare minimum.

i don’t think it’s unfair at all to be honest. if the mom is using it for diapers etc but uses the leftover money for herself why not ? opening a walmart account only for the baby’s needs isn’t enough because when a mom pays her mortgage/rent and bills she’s also paying for their child’s housing and lifestyle too and you can’t do that through walmart lol. and if after all the bills and necessities are paid and bought i don’t see why she can’t treat herself to something nice especially when it means the child can grow up with a happy parent, that child gets to have the best version of their parent.

I guess it's one thing to enhance your life through child support and another thing to maintain your life through child support. If you do things for self care and taking care of your child single handedly keeps you from doing that then that's not fair to the mom to be struggling. I'm sure there are mothers who know how to work the system and it's a bonus for them but seems like child support is a necessity for many single moms
