Are theatre rehearsals always in the evening?

Being a single parent mum with no support, finding time in doing the one thing I love, has been impossible so far.

I love acting. Acting is the very heart of me and has been since the age of 3. I want to join a theatre company/production and I’ve done theatre productions before having my son which was amazing.

The only downfall now is that theatre rehearsals are always in the evening running into the nighttime and I don’t have anyone who can look after my son 3-4 nights a week so I could attend rehearsals.
There’s auditions taking place for a few productions and I have been invited to attend. But what’s the point if I can’t rehearse because I have no one to look after my son.

It would be great to hear from single mums in particular (all mums welcome comment) who has no support but has somehow found a way to be an actress through the adversities of being a single mum.

I do not want to wait till my son is an adult to live my dream. I’ve put it in the back burner for so long and my inner child and my spirit cannot put it off any longer. I’m a mum, but I’m so much more than that. I love my son but my life matters too!

I cannot die in regret for not living my dream. So I’m holding onto hope that despite my circumstances, where there is a will, there is a way 🙏🏽.

I'm not sure if it's available where you live but where I live (calgary area in Canada) there are actually evening/overnight daycares. Is this maybe an option in your area??

I have heard of evening/overnight childcare, but I’m not sure if that’s common form of childcare in the UK that parents use and where they might be. Most parents typically use daytime childcare services like nannies and childminders. But I’ll have a look into evening/overnight childcare, thank you 🙌🏽.

I think you'd just have to pay a babysitter if it's that important to you. If you son is at nursery then often the staff do babysitting on the side and that way you'll know they've had all the right checks and that your son is comfortable with them.

this is true, I’ll need to invest in paying a babysitter. At the moment funds are tight unfortunately so I wouldn’t be able to afford it right now. Childcare is very expensive even if it’s only for a few hours at a time.

That’s the only thing with showbiz, it’s not made with parents in mind. When I’ve done film, I’ve been on set for 12-14 hours at a time and this doesn’t include travel time there and back. With theatre, rehearsals are usually a few days a week and always in the evening/nighttime. So unless you have a partner or friends or family that are willing to support you, or of course you have no children at all…it’s incredibly difficult.

How old is your son? I would talk to the director and producer about any accommodations that can be made should you get the part and what type of insurance they have so that you may be able to take your child with you.
Most rehearsals will be evening or weekend just due to time constraints.

If not then yes a babysitter is the only way forward!
Best of luck with it ❤️
