Contraceptives after birth

I’m only wanting to have one child (no doubt in my mind), so hoping to get my tubes tied after baby girl is born. Did any of you have this conversation with your doctors and how did it go? I’m 29 and worried they won’t allow for this and seeing if anyone has advice on how to vouch for yourself.

Also, what contraceptives besides the shot and pill is everyone taking after birth?

@Angelia consult with your OB on that. There are certain ones not reccommended when breast feeding.

I only want 2. My second is due in two weeks or so. I'm having a csection and while they are there they will also be removing my tubes. My OB is in full support and makes sure I am still okay with that choice when I go to my appointments. For reference I'm 28. So if that's what you want definitely talk to your OB about it

I got an iud about 8 weeks after birth it wasn’t for me as i kept bleeding for weeks

Tubes tied/ removed would be most effective- but it will require a c-section birth. Has your husband considered a vasectomy? Less invasive and similar effectiveness.

@Caitlin you kept bleeding with the IUD?

@Morgan yeah it just wouldn’t stop i waited a month and demanded it be removed my ob just kept saying it was normal

@Caitlin had you ever had an IUD before or was this your first? I know they say it’s common to have irregular bleeding when it’s first placed.

I’m getting the Nexplanon (arm implant) the same day I get cleared for sex at my 6week postpartum appointment. I chose the arm implant because I’m awful at remembering to take the pill and I didn’t want to chance it or deal with anything like the arm patch and all the other ones like that, was leaning toward the iud at first but I have heard it caused a lot of women to bleed extremely heavy and I haven’t seen that the arm implant has caused that with anyone and it’s basically the same type of deal , really low maintenance and lasts up to 3 years and then you can get another one out in right after

@Amie He has and we haven’t ruled it out, I just was hoping to go ahead and get it done if I can 😊

@Cassie See, I got nexplanon at 19 (2014ish) and it is a lot of the reason why I had infertility/hormonal issues. I bled heavy for 9 months and was wearing depends and had to beg to have it taken out and without changing my diet/exercise I gained 60lbs, all my hair started falling out, I had breakouts for the first time in my life and made me stupid crazy. I know for a lot of women it is amazing and I hope it’s the same for you, but I personally HATED it so much and hope it’s come a long way since I got it 😂 The only hormonal birth control that worked well for me was the Nuvaring, but it still makes me so moody. Haha.

@Angelia I had a similar problem! I bleed for a year straight and my OBs options for me at the time was to also take the pill. I was like hell no just get it out of me. After that it took years for my period to become regular again.

Post birth, I’m electing for the mini pill. I made the decision through a process of elimination. Patch major side effect is depression Depo - just no IUD - I’ve had a few friends lose a tube because it became engorged in their uterus.
