Unhappy little man with feeding
My LO is 5 weeks, we had latching problems so I have been expressing breastmilk & topping up with formula ( aptamil) only about 1 bottle a day or in the night. At about 3 weeks old he started with what we thought was trapped wind, red face, bringing legs up during/ after feeds, screaming so much he has tears down his face. he was very windy and would start farting about 5 minutes into his feed, he made sure to regular stops for burps but felt like it defeated the object because he would scream when you stopped to burp and gulp in so much air. We tried him on infacol but it didn’t seem to make much difference ( also it’s not every feed he’s like this so hard to put a finger on it). He still seemed to be very uncomfortable, we had size 0’teets so changed to size 1 to see if that makes a difference we also have the MAM anti colic bottles. Fast forward to now he’s been on gripe water for over a week, I thought it could be something in my milk that he’s intolerant to so he’s been on formula for the past 2 days to see if it makes a difference but he is still the same. This morning he’s had a big crying fit and I don’t know what else it could be or where to go from here, just want him to not be in pain, he is so happy and comfortable all the time he’s not being fed.
He’s also not constipated he goes very regular, pretty much imminently after a feed.

I found that aptamil was too harsh on my daughters tummy when she was a newborn. Have you tried another brand (kendamil or Hipp) as they’re known to be a bit more gentle on the stomach?
How does your milk look when it’s been standing a while? Is there a small % of fatty milk at the top? If so, it could be a bit of lactose overload and lactase drops might help him out.
No I haven’t tried anything else yet but that’s my next step thank you! ☺️
yes I have noticed it always has a top layer of thicker milk didn’t know that was fatty milk, thank you I’ll try it 😊
the fatty stuff is the good stuff! The watery bit is the higher lactose bit. With my first, I produced a lot of milk so didn’t get much fatty milk and he was very uncomfortable and at the worst points would have frothy poops!
Massage the boob before feeding or pumping to try and loosen some more fat cells.
This time round I’ve worked to reduce my supply but only because I’ve had skilled support from a lactation consultant. Do speak to one if you’re still having issues, they can give you lots of help
