Vag birth after a c section?

So my first pregnancy I had a c section because when they went to induce me my body wasn’t responding to the medication. I was having horrible contractions but I wasn’t dialating and the dr was worried my placenta was dying. I’m 8 month pp and just found out I’m pregnant and baby is due in December. I would like to have a vag birth but I was told by someone that it’s not a good idea to have a vag birth after a c section unless you had a vag and then the c section. Was just wondering if anyone has had an experience with this. Should I just get another c section or?

VBACs are very common and teams are very used to looking after women having them.

If I have baby on due date the births will be 17 months apart. Are there any complications I should be worried about?

The risks vary and depend on your obstetric history, the reasons for any previous caesarean(s), and whether you have previously given birth vaginally.
Risks of VBAC include the scar from the previous caesarean birth opening up (uterine rupture). This affects around one in 200 women trying for a VBAC. That risk is increased two to three fold if labour is induced.
Not everyone who plans a VBAC will succeed in having one. Out of 100 women attempting a VBAC, 25 will need an emergency caesarean.
Sometimes opting for a VBAC isn’t advised. For example, if you’ve previously had a uterine rupture, significant uterine stretching or uterine surgery, or have a vertical scar on your uterus or placenta praevia.

I know drs around me will not do a vbac if you have gotten pregnant before 18 months pp. The risk of uterine rupture goes up since your body didn't have the appropriate time to heal completely. But that's definitely something you would need to consult your Dr on since no one on here knows your medical history.

I was told that if I were to give birth any earlier than 18 months after my c-section it would have to be another c-section. So if this is true, you would have to have another c-section.

That’s what I was told by my OB. Again, not sure if that goes for everyone.

worth noting the overall risk of uterine rupture is 0.5% in VBACs, so even if it is increased, it is still incredibly low. So everyone's perception of risk will be different and every birthing person will have their own assessment of risks

I wouldn’t risk it… you won’t be fully healed by then.. the increase of uterine rupture increases, there’s a lot of factors that go into a VBAC. And since your past labor didn’t progress I’m not sure if they even would allow you to have one…

Also I know it’s not recommended to have more than 3 babies if you have a c section but if I do a vbacs and everything goes smoothly would that still apply?

Avatar

@Charley that might be true in your country, but in the United States, doctors don't listen when patients bring up issues or have problems. Plus because she will be giving birth before the recommend waiting period between c-sections, the risk is higher. That'd why I said she needs to talk to her Dr because we don't know what her medical history and since the first trial of labor failed and ended in c-section most likely her doctor won't agree.

Avatar

@Lindsey it's actually based on your body. Doctors can give you the general answer for everyone, but in one of my Facebook groups, there is someone who will be on there 7th c-section. It's obviously more risky but with the proper monitoring some women can have more than 3

This is a great group on Facebook that is 100% evidence based. They can be intense with their answers sometimes, but that's because many of them lost babies to attempted vbacs.

I got pregnant 6 months pp from c section and I’ve been told that if I want to try for vbac there would be no harm in going for it but I think it depends on every person and if you feel like you want to do it then go for it but if it’s making you too anxious I would opt for another c section

I have had five VBAC’s and they were all close together. Everything went quickly and smoothly each time!

Dont worry..im in a similar situation of having another baby before the recommended 18 months gap...they have sent me alot of booklets and leaflets through post to read and understand the risks of either vbac or repeated csection...they will give you multiple appointments to discuss and help u reach your decision....but in my case il just have a csection because im afraid of the uterine rapture which if it happens u end up in cs anyway and add more complications to an already high risk pregnancy

Baby boy is here!

Just had baby boy this morning at 5:49am 🥹🥰 I was in labor for 10 hours and pushed him out within 9 pushes. I cried tears of joy for like 20 minutes. All that pain was worth seeing his adorable little face and chubby cheeks 🫶🏾

Obstetrician led

I’m having shared care between midwife’s and obstetrician.

My previous pregnancy I had extra growth scans as baby was measuring big and I had pre-eclampsia during labour and a full dilated emergency C-section.

This time round I’m having obstetrician appointments, midwives appointments, cervical length scan every two weeks from 16-22/24, and extra growth scans again .

I’m just finding it all a lot to process can anyone let me know there experiences and if they went on to have a happy pregnancy despite it

Polly??

My 3 year old son is completely insistent that baby sisters name will be Polly. I think he just got attached ages ago after hearing it shouted in the park and now it does matter what name we suggest, even if he says he likes it, he still insists her name is Polly.

Now I dont hate it but its not really what I imagine for my daughter either?? I typically like full (yet girly) names with a cute nickname that can work in either a professional setting or out of work.

I think Polly just feels like a cute nickname to me? Also, I had an imaginary friend heavily inspired by Polly Pocket as a child so I dont think that helps 🤣

We just cant seem to agree on any names as a family so a bit stumped!

Mums that have kids🥰

When you gave birth and came back home with your newborn. When people wanted to come visit you straight away. How did you feel?

Everyone has different experiences I’m so curious x

Movements

How are people with no obvious ‘pattern’ monitoring baby movements?

My babies movements vary so much day to day, there is no pattern I can see whatsoever.

For example, over the weekend i felt him a few times during the day but nothing crazy, Monday & Tuesday he was wild in there and I felt movement on and off all day, today back to a few times.

When it varies this much I have no idea how I’m supposed to work out what is ‘normal’ and when to be worried!!!
