Steroid injections & magnesium?

I have my C-section booked for 32 weeks for my twins. My midwife said I’ll need to have two rounds of steroids before the birth to help their lungs develop. I read apparently there are risks of things like autism & learning difficulties though… now I don’t know whether to have the injections or not?! If you had the injections please could you share your experiences. Also wondered if anyone was given magnesium Sulphate to prevent cerebral palsy..? This hasn’t been mentioned but should I be pushing for it? Thanks so much, I’m just feeling quite anxious about my babies being born this early and looking for some reassurance 😓 xx

Hey so my waters broke at 22wks and I was advised at the time to have the steroid jabs to help with lungs as they wouldn't have matured etc .. I managed to carry him till 24wks.... He was born with chronic lung disease but we've been told he will grow out of it as his lungs grow etc, he came home without needing oxygen. When I initially went into labour I did have the magnesium drip , A very strange stinging sensation, but all in all he is grand! I know some families who weren't given the jabs and their babies have so many difficulties.....I don't know of it's just a coincidence with them being so early etc but I believe it helped my son 💙 He's delayed in small ways like he isn't talking much he just babbles but then again in my eyes he won't be 2 untill June his actual due date , he turnt 2 in March so I just feel we're constantly playing catch up 🤦🏻‍♀️❤️ I hope this has helped in some ways x

There is not enough evidence on this steroid in favor or against of developing autism or difficulties. I belive the likelihood is very very low. Your biggest difficulty is her not having functioning lungs if delivered early. We got the shots at 30 weeks. We had a scare that she'd have to be delivered that week. She came out screaming at 37 +2, with no complications. If you are worried about autism and delayed development I would highly recommend you researching vaccines. If I was going to sway you one direction it would be against these.

I got the shot for my 28 weeker. He is 1.5 with no signs of any issues. He’s actually ahead on most things so we’ve stop seeing specialists at this point. The links between various shots and autism has been debunked but I understand that might not ease your mind. I do think getting the shot and having a baby with functioning lungs greatly outweighs the unlikely risk of Autism

I had them, you want to have them or your children could be stuck in the NICU because they can’t come off oxygen. I have seen more bad outcomes when the mom has not been able to get the shot versus good outcomes when it comes to lung disease and pulmonary hypertension. Since they will be cutting the babies out of you, I don’t think you would need the magnesium, that’s more to prevent birth injuries coming through the canal from my understanding. Plus, as someone who was on it four times during her five week hospital stay, it is not fun and you will already be going through enough with the C-section. Like someone threw you in the broiler, nauseous, and drowsy.

@Kiarra thank you that’s really helpful to know about the magnesium!

I had steroid injections at 29weeks and magnesium a few hours before delivery (31+5). I think the steroids have helped baby grow a little bit, but they’re predominantly to help their lungs develop so they need less support with breathing. He’s doing great 3 days after delivery, not using oxygen anymore and just on the ventilator. The magnesium is to protect their brains as they’re not fully developed so early on. They’ve been doing scans of his brain in the nicu and they’re very happy with his development so far. My personal experience with the magnesium injection was that my whole body went really hot and it was uncomfortable. I couldn’t tell you how long it lasted but probably a good half hour. The midwife said it’s a common side effect as it goes into your whole bloodstream, but not sure if it happens to everyone. Tbf that was nothing compared to the surgery 😅
