She’s crying, I’m crying

She’s 5 weeks old. I’ve had her to the doctors 4 times already and they keep telling us it’s reflux. We’re on hour 12, of her refusing to sleep, she won’t even settle cuddling. She’s had an hours sleep total since 11am. This has been happening since day one, only the days are getting longer, the cries are getting more intense and I wake up dreading the day that tiny bit more. She’s gone from drinking 4oz and 5oz bottles, to barely touching an ounce and below is a picture of what happens after an ounce. She cries when she eats, when she’s sick, when she’s pooing and when she passes wind. We’ve used colic drops, she’s on Gaviscon… is this CMPA

How are her poops?? Possible milk allergy?

i had to really push for them to diagnose cmpa- i think as it costs them money to prescribe milk so may have to keep going back until you get somewhere! x

These are all her symptoms Screaming after feeds Sick in between and after feeds, sometimes hours after Coughing / gagging during feedings Pimple like spots that are spreading with every feed Dry skin across her forehead Hiccups that last 15 minutes after every feed Wheezing / grunting occasionally Pain when she passes wind / tries to poo Foul smelling nappies and mucusy or she’s extremely constipated Congested / sneezing a lot Refusing bottles or drinking a lot then being extremely uncomfortable Can’t sleep as she wakes up crying

See a different doctor or got to a children’s hospital. Some doctors will tell you anything. If you feel something isn’t right you have to advocate for her.

I’ve seen multiple doctors, only one actually said she might have that but we have to try all the things for reflux first. The last one said I had to have her on Gaviscon for 4 weeks at least and then omeprazole for another 4 if that doesn’t work and then they’ll look at cmpa. By that point of trying all that and waiting for the allergy milk to work, she’ll be 6 months old 😢 I’m going back tomorrow as it’s been almost 2 weeks she’s been on the Gaviscon and it’s not even touched the sides, she’s only get worse! If not, I’m definitely going to try go private!

I don’t know if it would help but it might be worth trying to get your hands on some prescription milk and trying it - I got told to buy it try the milk and if there was an improvement ask for it from the gp. We are now on SmA alfamino but tried many many milks before this! While things are still hard sometimes my boy is a different child. I’m happy to message and talk if you want as the list of things you said my boy had and I was at my wits end! We still are going private for an allergy test and he doesn’t sleep well either so I’m there with you! We used to have to rock him or go for a drive constantly as he would just scream and scream! Message me if you want any further info or just to chat! I’ve spent the whole last 6 months googling and researching and pushing the doctors for answers!! X

It sounds like CMPA to me. Or if it is reflux she needs stronger medicine. Many people on the CMPA groups I’m in end up having Omeprazole for their babies’ reflux. Have you tried taking her to A&E rather than the GP? Explain that she’s barely slept or drank in 24 hours. Maybe then she can be seen by a paediatrician. Our CMPA was diagnosed by a paediatrician at hospital - not through A&E, we were directed to the children’s ward by the midwives due to lack of weight gain with my little one. Whoever you see next, try pushing that you think it is a CMPA diagnosis or that you need stronger reflux medicine. If possible get a second person to go with you, I imagine it’s hard to advocate right now if you’re tired and stressed. Write down all the symptoms and take the list with you.

Could you try buying a tub of the milk free formula and trying her on it? I know they’re expensive but if you just bought one you could see if her symptoms improve. If it is CMPA they won’t all completely improve straight away but should improve enough to know you’re on the right track. If she does improve on that you can go back to the GP and let them know - then hopefully they can prescribe it going forwards

I was just going to be the milk free formula but I wasn’t sure if the gp would prescribe after I went and bought it myself… She definitely has reflux but reflux is usually a symptom of another issue, so I can only assume it’s CMPA! She has finally just gone to sleep, in her Moses basket, I just hope she gets some sleep! I’ve got my sister travelling from Scotland tomorrow to help me out with her and the doctors, she’s a bit more forceful than me! The problem is, she was gaining weight, but now she’s dropped her feeds to only 1-3oz a bottle, and still throwing up the way she is I’m worried she’s going to lose it!

Take her to A&E! I had to take my LB to A&E to get the answers I knew I needed. I hope you get her sorted ♥️

My advice is try to do it yourself it’s expensive I know but worth a try. Same issue was with our son I got fed up of gp telling us it’s colic and doctors ignoring us so I purchased myself aptamil pepti 1 infant formula for cmpa and I used the gaviscon sachets too in the milk as this aptamil pepti formula really tin and I also went completely dairy free if you combination feeding its recommended too. I did this for a month and my son eczema and his poo slowly returned to normal and his cries were gone. I’m not saying it’s always the case but worth a try

Look up heidi.positivelyparenthood on insta she has done a lot of work with allergies and CMPA. It might offer you some insight. But despitely keep gping back to the drs, if they keep fobbing tou off, I'd go to the hospital and also put a complaint in

Sounds like a milk allergy to me. My daughter also just constantly screamed her first month. We switched to a reduced lactose formula and then goat milk formula and I stopped eating a lot of dairy since we combo feed and she’s done much better. I don’t think she’s fully allergic but definitely had some sensitivity I would switch formulas for sure and see if that helps

My daughter has CMPA and has all the same symptoms. I brought a tub of formula myself, the first bottle and she was like a different child. I then called the GP and told them that she had an allergy and asked them to prescribe the milk rather than asking them if she did have an allergy!

@Maya sounds like cmpa

SMA do a milk that babies with CMPA can drink, I’ve seen it in boots … could give it a try x

Has she been checked for tongue tie? I do think it’s CMPA, keep a close eye on nappies my son started to have blood in them at 7 weeks and doctor sent us straight to a&e x

This infuriates me Reflux isn’t a diagnosis it’s a symptom of ‘something’ going on and they should be investigating that 😒 I fell really really lucky as the second dr we seen had just done the whole battle for 4 months for his own daughter to be diagnosed and he went I’m not putting you through that she’s identical to my daughter let’s try it and see I think you definitely have to keep going back or present at a&e every time until they also get sick of you and try it! I find some GPS are bloody awful

I gave my son gaviscon for reflux and it made his constipation worse so I told the doctor I will not give it to him if it’s causing him more pain. It’s like you have to be pretty forceful with them. Tell them you want to be referred to a dietitian and a paediatrician. I told them to prescribe me with dairy free milk and they said no, I then read the NHS guideline and they then said yes. I’m sorry your baby is going through this just try and push as hard as you can and they will give in xx

Both my babies have cmpa and it sounds like it to me. If the gp isnt listening id take her to a&e then she will see a paediatric dr, once they prescribe milk the gp will continue it. With my first baby i had to really fight the gps! I found the local guidance online for my local area and asked them why they wasnt following it. You can also contact your health visitor as they sometimes contact gps aswell. However if shes not eating or sleeping id go to a&e so shes seen quickly as u dnt want her getting dehydrated. Good luck mumma xx

Sounds exactly like my boy who also had cmpa . Symptoms resolved within few days of me cutting dairy and soy ( he was EBF)

I think I would go to A&E and have her checked by a paediatrician if it were me. Sounds like the doctor isn’t giving you what you need, your mamma instinct is strong.

I’m so sorry my heart goes out to you and your little one. My daughter was like this and it is exhausting and heartbreaking. Her symptoms sound exactly the same as my daughters. I found the doctors were useless (this was 5 years ago now and I’m sad to hear it sounds like yours are the same) so we ended up going to a paediatrician who diagnosed her straight away. I would agree with above, if you can, buy a tin of formula like Nutramigen or neocate and see if it helps. Then if it does go to the doctors demanding a prescription. Chemist-4-u deliver next day. Happy for you to DM me if you want to chat more. Trust your gut and push for her. I’m so sorry she, and you, are so sad at the moment xx

@Beki she’s been checked, she doesn’t have one! She also clicks her tongue off the roof her mouth a lot so I’m assuming that’s not part of the problem! X

@Rosie🪷 what did you say to them regarding the NHS guideline, I’ve tried looking but the pdf files don’t open properly on my phone so I can only see half of the leaflets! Xx

She woke up at 6 and drunk 4 oz, but it took a while for her to stop fussing and squirming to go to sleep! I’ve got her in the doctors at 10 this morning, and I’m hoping to speak to a health visitor before then to ask for some advice and see if they can leave any notes on her record! If not, I’m just going to order her some milk and see what happens!

I went to the doctors with my little girl and they refused to give me anything so I called my health visitor and told her my daughters symptoms and said she has every sign for CMPA, she said we needed a trial of milk just to rule it out so she wrote a email to the doctors saying they must give us a prescription, we went back to the doctors and we were out on nutramigen within a week our first visit to the gp (we went 3 times) and we had a changed baby! We’re now on aptamil pepti syneo as we were still having constipation issues xx

Just to say, I was this child in the days before CMPA was really a thing they thought about. I never slept and would refuse milk and just scream and my parents were just told it’s colic get on with it and it wasn’t until later in life I got diagnosed so suffered for years but I’m absolutely fine now! Be forceful with the doctors about it and say can we at least try it because my child is really struggling right now and is showing signs.

@Amy I agree, you need to find a doctor who’s child has been through this to get the right care!! My daughters consultant in the paediatrics department of my hospital has a child who went through the same, I’m finally getting the help I need.

I wanted to share the crying curve. For babies who cry more, they typically peak in fussiness around 6 weeks: https://www.bardonosteopathy.com.au/crying-curve/

@Maya definitely sounds like could be CMPA, it sounds exactly how my little boy was and my heart goes out to you because it’s exhausting and heart breaking at the same time. Push your Drs to look into it for you. My little boy is 6 months and after trying 3 different hydrolysed milks, Omeprozole, gaviscon, infacol, gripe water - you name it we’ve tried it, we’re now under the care of a dietician who has prescribed us an amino acid formula which is completely milk free and he’s having to be dairy free until he’s 1. I had so many different doctors tell me it’s this / it’s not, its soooo frustrating and I completely understand how you’re feeling right now, but what I can say is since being on the amino acid formula (on week two now) were noticing a difference for the first time ever. Feel free to message me if you need to chat to anyone x

@Maya it basically says if your baby has or they think they have CMPA then your gp can prescribe you the milk. We did a three week trial and nothing change so they don’t think my boy has CMPA. But I said to them that it’s so hard to find and so expensive that they have to prescribe it. I also flat out refused to give him anymore gaviscon as it was causing him so much more pain x

Get to a feeding specialist/lactation consultant asap to check oral function! X

My health visitor called just before I went into the doctors and she told me to just demand the milk! We’ve left with aptamil Pepti 1, as she scored 28/33 on the symptoms list, but we have to wait until tomorrow to get the milk from our local chemist! Hopefully we see some changes 🥺❤️

@Maya just so you’re aware that milk still contains milk proteins so she may still react but you should absolutely see a change within about a week x

Does seem like cmpa. Just to say if there’s no improvements with that milk ask for an amino acid based milk that’s completely dairy free (not just broken down proteins). My little girl was prescribed nutramigen puramino. X

Time to rock up at the hospital and demand a thorough investigation. Hope you get to the bottom of it. 🙏🏻❤️

Add thickener to her milk! That's the hospital gave us in Adelaide so give it ago

Take her the woman and children hospital in Adelaide qnd get a second opinion definitely
