I don’t think you can go backwards, it’s possible two nurses measured and got different results? Not sure what policy is where you are but if you aren’t in active labor (5 cm or more) or have had waters break they don’t usually admit you. How far apart are your current contractions?

Hi! It is actually totally possible to go back! Practitioners have recorded it happening in situations where the birthing person doesn’t feel completely safe or comfortable. But just as likely that if two different people measured then they simply approximated different results like @Ragain said. Also like she said, it is unlikely a hospital would admit you unless you are further dilated.

@Ragain they are less than 5 mins apart

Are they also lasting at least a minute long and have been going on for an hour or more?

My hospital monitored me for an hour when I was at a 2 and after an hour I was at a 3. To help with measuring dilation they had two nurses come in to check. They told me if I lived close to the hospital they wouldve sent me home but they admitted me because I lived an hour away one way and I was in early labor so they knew I'd be back so they just admitted me and I had my baby 9 hours later.

@Laurel interesting! Didn’t know that could happen!

@Sabrina Morrison I was always told the 5-1-1 rule. 5 minutes apart, lasting a minute each for an hour. Honestly in my experience you are way better off laboring at home in early labor where you can eat and be comfortable!
