Private care - GD appointments

I have just been diagnosed with GD and have been told my initial appointment will cost $340 and each appointment after that will cost $170 (I live in Australia so some will be refunded under Medicare) I’m registered to a private OB but didn’t think I would be this much out of pocket for something out of my control. Has anyone else had to pay this much for consultations/appointments? They are all via zoom too.

I’m trying to remember as it was a couple of years ago for me but I think the consultation was $180 and appointments $100. (Also private in Aus) but prices have definitely gone up since then

@Simone Thankyou ☺️ I suppose if that’s the price then that’s just what it is 🤷🏼‍♀️ I just wasn’t expecting to have to pay so much. A few friends have had GD but were using the public system and didn’t have to pay anything. Hope you are going well in your pregnancy!

Yeah I was annoyed that I couldn’t go public for that and just Private for my obstetric care. Because I also wasn’t expecting the additional cost

@Simone it definitely doesn’t seem fair when you already pay so much to be private anyway 😞

Hello! I’m in the public system and haven’t paid a cent to manage my GD, even my testing kits and insulin have been provided for free. I’ll need to purchase some replacement test strips but I think that may also be covered by the NDSS. Would be worth seeing if you can access a public version of care for your GD, or perhaps ask what is necessary to get the information and tools you need?

I should add, I’ve only had three phone calls and a follow up in my regular doctor/midwife appointments, so haven’t had specific appointments just for GD. You will likely get more care through the private system, but at the cost! Good luck!

@Hannah thanks Hannah, will definitely do some research and see what I can find out. It seems my hospital have a program too that I will look into but will be out of pocket for that too. Hope you’re going well in your pregnancy and have coped ok with GD! ☺️

I’m in Australia going through private and I’ve been charged $215 for initial consultation with dietitian and $150 for a separate education session with midwife. After that if I want more in depth sessions with the dietitian it’s $50 each (otherwise I send weekly reports to the dietitian and she will provide feedback and answer any short questions for free).

@Katie thanks Katie, that’s good to know. Seems either way I’ll have to pay, which is fine I just hadn’t expected it when we’re already paying so much for private care!

Yes unfortunately extra cost to address this GD issue which is out of our control!! :( good luck with your GD journey! I’m 2.5 weeks post diagnosis and still trying to figure out the right balance with diet etc…

@Katie I think that’s what annoyed me.. it’s not like we have opted in to having GD 😞 Good luck on yours too! I only got diagnosed this week but trying to figure out who I go to for my first appointment before I even get a monitor or diet plan. I’ve been making some changes already so hopefully I can start a tailored plan soon 🤞🏼 Only 11 weeks to go 😅 x
