Glucose Tolerance Test

I’ve got my GTT next week and I’m so anxious about it. I’ve struggled this whole pregnancy with morning sickness, to the point if I don’t eat something as soon as I’m awake I will vomit even with anti sickness meds. I’m fine as long as I eat something before I get up, but obviously for the GTT I can’t eat from 9pm the night before until after the test at around 11am. I’ve also struggled with extreme sciatica so I can’t sit for long and I’m dreading having to sit for 2 hours on a hard chair. The whole thing is just filling me with dread 🤦‍♀️

Hey @Meg I have also had my gtt test done and I was alos so anxious but it really was not that bad u fast they take a set of bloods to see your fasting glucose they them give u this clear liquid drink to drink to challenge your glucose depending on were it's getting done they may even let you leave and come bk for the next set of bloods that's what mine did just asked me to come bk in 2 hours they then check ya glucose again and get results within 24 to 48 hours

@Gemma ah okay, thank you! My unit has said I have to stay in the waiting room for the 2 hours as I did ask if I would be able to go for a short walk round the hospital grounds with my partner. I think it’s mainly the fasting I’m worried about 😣

I had my gtt and I was absolutely dreading it and I was so so nervous but when you get in there and you are sat there time flies by I sat and watched Netflix on my phone for 2 hours so made it bearable. You will be fine @Meg you have nothing to worry about :)

@Meg I totally get were ya coming from I found the fasting the hardest just try do your best they can not expect anything more I'd advice to take a snack with u to eat after second set of bloods

I have recently just been diagnosed, I was sick after drinking the drink, so they did a different type of test where I tested myself for 5 days at home, if you’re struggling you could ask for them to test you in another way :) x

I had mines last week. It was fine, the drink tasted like a capri sun. X

Mine said I needed to stay in the waiting room because it can affect the accuracy of the test because you burn glucose off faster when moving around but I felt extremely sick after having the drink and I felt really hot; so I just went outside the hospital it was only a 2 minute walk and stood outside and the fresh air helped my sickness go away. If I didn’t go outside I definitely would’ve been sick and had to redo the test, I just explained to the nurse that it was either walk to go outside or be sick and ruin the test and she was fine with it. This may help if you feel the same xxx

Just make sure you tell the midwife doing the test. If you’re feeling sick, sip the drink slowly, don’t down it. You have to drink it over 5 min or so. Take something to have as soon as your second blood test is done. You can have sips of water between the two blood tests. Take some ice water if that helps ?

I’ve got HG, I cancelled my GT test as it would make me 10 x worse, you don’t have to do it they can monitor you in other ways, they did with me in my previous pregnancy as I was very sick during the test and couldn’t do it again x

I had it too and have had bad sciatica, try to find the comfiest seat in the waiting room! I had to move onto a sofa after an hour as I was getting pain! As for the fasting, take cold water and have sips! I had a funny turn 45 mins in and thought I was going to be sick but I did some deep breathing and took small sips of water and it passed. Try to distract yourself- mine went fast as I people watched and watched TikTok lol! Turns out I do have GD but it’s being managed with diet. It’s so important so just see it as a must for your baby. I hope it goes okay for you!!!

I had my GTT done on Friday and similarly to you, had the same worries. Unfortunately I did vomit an hour after taking the glucose drink so the test was invalid, so I’ve been rebooked for next week. If I can’t keep it down, then I’ll have to do finger prick blood tests for a week as an alternative. Hopefully you will be absolutely fine but I just wanted to comment and say I feel for you as I had exactly the same worries and it’s awful isn’t it. Wishing you all the best!

I would maybe ask if you could sit in the car if you are driving? I was allowed to walk really slowly to the car but the car park is right near the waiting room. It helped to get comfy in the car. Also I was really pleased I could have the glucose drink as I was starving so it was welcomed xx
