How long should a nappy blue line be before change?

Hi ladies,
FTM here and I wanted to ask you how long should the blue wetness indicator line be on a nappy before I need to change it? I change it even if it’s just halfway blue and wonder if I maybe waste too many nappies this way ?

Heya I'm a FTM as well, our bub was in the NICU and they trained us to change her nappy whenever she has pooped and before every feed so we have continued doing that. We also change her if it's in-between feeds but she's unsettled even if it's only partially blue. But she doesn't like sitting in a wet nappy

There’s not really any right or wrong way as such - it’s up to you and what you feel comfortable with for your baby. It depends how full the nappy is - if the blue line is only halfway then I wouldn’t imagine there’s a lot of wee in there! When my daughter was new and small, we changed a lot more regularly and would also change sometimes with half a blue line - we just used to check inside to see how full. Now she’s bigger (nearly 11 months), she can have her nappies on for around 3 hours whereas if I think back to newborn/little, we’d sometimes do it every hour maybe two 😊 we definitely did it before every single feed (plus extra for poops!)

I sometimes change if not fully wet. It depends how long she been wearing the nappy as even if nappy not full its still wet and coming into contact with her skin. If wet nappy left on too long it could cause nappy rash but there no official guidelines. My daughter has never had nappy rash

You can definitely get away with changing less often. The nappy is very good at drawing the moisture away from babies skin. If she pooped I'd change it immediately but otherwise every 3-4 hours. I go by feel rather than colour and change it when it starts to feel chunky. My daughter never had a nappy rash

Hey, I never realised the line had to be blue all the way along. I've always been changing it whenever I look and it's a bit blue. Does this still count as a 'wet nappy' or does a wet nappy just count when the line is fully blue? We assumed my lo was getting enough as he was producing wet nappies but now I'm thinking maybe they were not wet enough? Thank you

Yes, i try not to go over 3 hours , unless night time. Its also about comfort. I just dont think my baby be comfortable with big heavy wet nappy on. I buy aldi and sainsburys nappies own brand, super cheap x

With my first baby I would change her all the time. With my second, I change as soon as I realise there’s a poo in there but if it’s just wee I’ll keep the same nappy on for 3-4 hours. I generally just feel it to see if it feels really big / like it’s absorbed a lot!

I go by the feel of how much pee I feel is in there. If I can feel any type of weight to the pee then I change it.

Avatar

I go for how the nappy feels instead of how blue the line is. My baby wees like an absolute champion so sometimes he can go 3/4 hours and be okay but sometimes he can go 2 hours and the nappy is absolutely packed with wee!

It depends! If baby is fussing I’ll change it no matter how long the line is as long as it’s changed color a bit. When my LO was little she’d scream for a change as soon as she weed even in her sleep. Now she’s 8 months and sometimes she’ll fuss for a change when only the top of the line has changed and sometimes she’ll wait till she’s weed so much it’s leaked out. If your going through nappies fast maybe think about a different brand some don’t wick as well as others and baby will feel they are wet more. We were using pura nappies in the beginning but went through them so quickly because they didn’t wick the moisture as well we switched to Aldi and she could go much longer in between changes.

I change it when it's fully blue but being that my daughter learned that when she's uncomfortable with the diaper she would take it off meaning we have to change her(she's a toddler) I used to change her even when the line is not fully blue, I do the same with my son unless I know they have a poopy diaper they get changed immediately

Avatar

FTM and I change it whenever it is wet

4-6 tablespoons of fluid will make the blue like show

I change my son every 1-2 hours

I work in a baby room within a nursery ,so I have change every 3 hour and when he poops following the same rules i would if I was at work ☺️ x

I just try to change at least every 3 hours unless it’s REALLY heavy or there is poop! In the beginning I’d change once woken up from a nap (after feeding because she’d always poop during the feeding, but that’s just my baby) and before a nap (before feeding so if she fell asleep I didn’t wake her by changing her). Once they’re older and not sleeping as much the general rule of thumb is about 3 hours :). She’s 10 months now and sometimes the line turns blue IMMEDIATELY after I change it. I don’t rush to go change again. It’s ok if you leave it a little, if you’re comfortable with that. My girl has never had a diaper rash ever!

Avatar

As newborns I changed every feed so rougly every 2-3 hours (unless they pood obviously). When they get a bit bigger they can go longer i dont wake mine up to change them if theyre sleeping x

Avatar

I usually check every 2- 3ish hours so sometimes the diaper is full. If I notice half a blue line though I will change it. I've also changed her diaper when there's just a tiny bit of blue, I figure if I'm already putting the effort in to checking then I might as well give her a fresh diaper.

Avatar

I do the same. I change it if she’s pooped or before every bottle!

dark blue line (it will actually get darker and darker) is an immediate change. I have a boy, so whether the line is halfway or not depends on whether his cooter is pointed down or not, so I don't really take that into account. If it feels heavy and he seems wiggly I'll change it. If it's poop I'll change it immediately no matter how much.

Scan needed at 33 weeks

Hi ladies! I just had a midwife appointment (I am 33+5)..the midwife was different to my usual midwife. She's requested I have a scan within 72 hours as she said baby is measuring a little small, however, she did say that it's likely nothing to worry about and it's probably just her measuring me a bit different to my usual midwife. Has anyone else had this? Am a bit worried although babys heartbeat and movements are completely fine.

Finding out gender

Has anyone found out the gender at a private scan at 14 weeks? And has this been accurate?

I found out at 17 with my first but I know a scan place that offers from 14/15 weeks and I’m impatient 😂🥲

Rolling milestone at 5 months - What’s typical ?

Good morning ladies,

My daughter will be 5 months old tomorrow, but there’s still no sign of her rolling. She does tummy time and loves lying on her mat, playing with hanging toys above her and to the sides, but she only lifts her legs and doesn’t seem interested in rolling or moving sideways yet.

Anyone else the same or have your babies already learnt how to roll yet ?

Thank you
